Although I don't think my situation is as bad as yours, it's a milder version of the same problem.

My flatmate gets back before I do as well and is pretty much always sitting on (the best side of) the sofa, watching TV and with his laptop on his knees. Plus I tend to do stuff in the evening (gym, art club, finishing work late, pub on occasion) but he never does. I'm sure he used to have a life and friends before he moved in, but it's as if (because my house is a nice environment - thanks to my hard work - and in a pretty good location) he's basically decided to have the laziest and easiest life possible.

To be fair, he will leave politely and quickly if I ask to have the living room to myself for a bit, but I always need to come up with an actual reason such as a Wii workout, as "...because you're basically here 100% of your waking hours and I never get to just watch TV by myself" isn't easy to say. He also goes to bed later than I do, despite having to get up earlier than me for work, so no watching TV after he's gone to bed either.

I do have a TV in my room though, so that's something. And we generally get on well and often watch DVDs in the lounge together before bedtime. I just wish it was only me on that couch once in a while!

Luckily he sleeps until about noon on weekends, so unless it's been a really late one I can enjoy some morning pottering for a while.

Oh God, all this makes me so glad Dan and I are so close. We do argue about stuff in the house - mainly my untidiness - but we're like family. The thought of being so uncomfortable in my own house is horrible.

To be fair, it looks a lot worse written down than it actually is. It sounds like they're almost identical situations! (although he does more than me during the week, and I more than him at weekends). Once again, the solution is to move in together.

I needed my tool kit fetching up from down South (nr Gatwick) and delivering to me in Sheffield so been getting quotes - many coming in at around £70/80, which surprised me slightly!

Luckily i stumbled across ParcelForce (dunno why didn't try these first) and they will do it for £12.50, which is much better.

Whoop!

My Spurs supporting friend (who[at 24] previously claimed that because he has played Village/Weekend football for 85% of his life - that he knows more about football than anyone who hasn't 'played the game') will today have to see AVB take over at Spurs. A man who has never played a professional game of football in his life. Karma is alive and well.

HIGGS-BOSON particle. More to the point, my complete inability to understand what it is really - BUT IT'S A BIG THING.

Be better if it was the Higg's Bosom particle, mind.

Is it a big thing in theoretical physics, or will it be able to impact on applied physics?

I'm trying to find out, but every article I open is far too dense with science jargon for my brain to handle!

Oh god, same here. There's a vid on the guardian site that explains it all using a tray, sugar and ping pong balls that essentially makes sense. I'm not convinced that this breakthrough will result in Back to the Future style hoverboards so I'm yet to see the value of it.

No, it's just very far away....

Kind of reminds me of the time I tried to understand the Doomsday Argument. It didn't go well.

I've tried to properly get my head round it too, the BBC have a wee explanation. As far as I've understood, the Higgs boson particle is inside protons, which are inside nuclei, which are inside atoms - and this discovery helps explain how things gain mass. I think? I haven't done physics since school, doing French was a great idea...

I failed GCSE science. I read A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson a few years ago and it was a great 'beginners' guide' to science, but in some places only just within the realm of my understanding. I'd like to re-read it at some point in fact.

Even this is a little complicated but at least the drawings are nice. http://vimeo.com/41038445

'Higgs Boson is believed to be a particle that provides mass to other particles. However detecting it is very difficult since you can't observe it directly, so you can only observe the by-products of it. But those by-products can be produced from other reactions. So they have to run collisions over and over and over to observe what happens and collect data to look for the very tiniest of fluctuations that will prove it's existence.
But in all that, it doesn't really explain a lot more of what quarks, leptons, and how higgs bosons fit into them.' http://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/w0tp3/eli5_the_higgs_boson_the_god_particle/

There were plenty of sights last time I was there. None of them pretty. I think its probably nicer now.

S'ok these days y'know.

Well, the more easterly side is. Dunno what that area is called tho....? Manchester, I think!

It is nice. The docks, the Tate, the shops on Matthew Street, the Walker gallery, all good.

I went to uni there - TWO of the three places I lived in no longer exist! One road in glamorous L7 has been flattened (presumably for the good of humanity) and the other place, a mere 5 min walk from Anfield (and the other place if you were so inclined to go there) has been demolished and turned into slightly less death-trappy looking buildings where, presumably, radiators don't fall off walls and the front door has a lock that works properly.

I've looked into a Beatles tour and I'll be going to the docks too. I'll play everything else by ear and just go where the wind takes me. Might hop across to Manchester in the evening for dinner as I know it quite well and know where to get a nice meal. Table for one please.
