You said 'type of software'.

As for specific ones, there are literally hundreds to choose from, and the ones Music4 or the BBC use might be custom made. However, one of my personal favourites is Audacity. That will allow you to record and edit all types of audio, it's free and fairly simple to use.

Don't think SADiE is completely custom made for the beeb :o

Lots of luck in getting a copy of that though. Otherwise as Adam said Cool Edit or Protools is the next best thing.

How do you get the 'effects' used in jingles?

I don't know the techie term - like the "swooshy" effects used on the R1 jingles. I'm walking about those.

The effects are just that, effects either built in to the program to available through plugins.

Or a series of small sound effects you simply combine with the voiceover artist to make the jingles.

Its more than likely, that the BBC and Music4, get the jingles and sound effects using Fancy Software AND/OR Hardware such as Audio Keyboards, Mixers Etc, to get proffesional results.

the swoosh effects are known as a 'sonic'.

as for creating a jingle, the audio editing software to use is the least of your problem.

If your only really looking to create promo's ie just voiceover plus sound effect and music, cool edit is your best bet. If you look around hard enough (possibly limewire) you may be able to get the cheapest deal wink wink.

As for sonics/sound effects, do a search on google under 'sound design' and you should find some free samples to use.

However, if you have cool edit a bit of experimentation with the different audio effects can enable you to create your own sound effects.

I started off with Audacity, nice and simple to use, then I switched to Adobe Audition because.. well in theory it should have been better. I found it was way too complicated..and infact I managed to delete 5 minutes worth of podcast which we had to record again because I'm an idiot.. but there we go.

If you want to make a jingle you need to think of a theme tune, and find a way to make it. If not you could get the "DIY Jingle" from the site, it's got the chris moyles theme and "The Chris Moyles Show National Radio One" at the end, but you could just pretend that's there for comedy value or something..

If you get audacity you just import the mp3 file into the program, then record yourself singing over it or something like that.. then export it as an MP3 again and you can play it anywhere you want, or carry on recording after you've done the jingle.

Does anyone know a program that will help make a theme tune, or am I going to have to get a keyboard out to make my own?

You can create a midi file without a keyboard, although it is significantly easier with a keyboard. There are loads of programs that can do it, try googling for some.

In the world of midi based fun - Cubase is a good one - for some god forsaken reason i made a remix of Popcorn which sounded rather good for a botched up remake.
