i actually sort of agree with gaspode, and i'm a huge fan of monty python. (why do you think i'm spending new year's day in sheffield?)

python was funny, but it was also really dumb. going back and rewatching it now, there are so many forgettable bits that, well... people forget. so they just focus on the dumber ones that are more memorable.

Considering the 1st Python series was made in 1969 it's hardly supprising. Look at it in the context it was made in and then judge it. Then judge all those who have followed.....

The thing that made Monty Python so important in 1969 was not that it was so incredibly different, or subversive, or anything like that - just that it was on television. There was plenty of satirical and strange comedy around then, but it was all on radio, and the quality was amazing. Monty Python was just the first show to put it on TV - and then of course to export it. I'm not a massive fan, bits are funny, but it is inevitably dated I find. But I love the programmes Terry Jones and Michael Palin are making now.

Agreed, but it was also a test bed for comedy, A great many of the gags simply didnt work, and to sit through a series of original MPFC shows would give anyone a headache!
I grew up with MPFC, (and if we ever watched it the sound of my Dad muttering "pathetic" in the background) and at the time we would falsely grin at the chaff, waiting for the good bits, and at some point there always was.

my parents forced us to watch mpfc as kids- a lot. they'd drop lines into conversation all the time, and still do! i think that's just one reason i turned out like i did.

i want to go check out michael palin's grammar school, but i think the answer will be no.

Show is up, and platinum: https://archive.org/dow[…]
