What an utterly ridiculous thing to say.

why is it? has been a pretty crappy year so far, just second to 2001 at the moment in my book.

back on topic, I don't see how they can eke more than a season out of Lost, I thought it was more of a mini-series of the kind done countless times before.

First world war (1914 - 1918): 15,000,000 people killed.

Russian Civil War (1917-22): 9 000 000 killed

Soviet Union, Stalin's regime (1924-53): 20 000 000 killed

Second World War (1939 - 45): 55 000 000 killed.

The Bubonic plague (1665): 2 000 000 killed.

Point being: every year brings misery.

Why has this been a bad year anyway? The only majorly bad thing that I can think of is the famine in Niger.

ok but of the 21st century?

single worst event - 9/11 - over 2.7 thousand killed (seems the death toll was reduced by around 40 in 2003) in a single event, and then add Pentagon and Pennsylvania planes to that.

year with biggest number of crap events, 2005
loads of dying celebs, hell breaking loose in Iraq, 7/7 and 21/7 (albeit failed) attacks, africa starving, chav population growing, ASBOs increasing...

and good events... Live8

Ha. I was going to write up a detailed analysis of each of those points but frankly its not worth the effort.

Yeah, the 24,000 killed in the tsunami wasn't even slightly tragic.

loads of dying celebs

Why does them being celebrities make it any worse than normal people dying?

The Pope dying..

It's certainly been a really awful year. More bad/sad events have happened than good ones.

And just to end to the misery - Colombian airliner has crashed..

You could say that about every year though. More bad news gets reported than good news.

On the subject of people dying, did anyone see that programme on the slave trade on channel 4 last night? The presenter got lawyers to work out a compensation payout to relatives (just like what happened in Germany to relatives of Holocaust victims) and the total came to 7.5 trillion pounds. Can't remember much about this year but the London bombings were pretty bad.

The terrorist attack on London was bad, but when compared to 9/11 we got off lightly.

It was annoying that some people were trying to make out that it was just as bad as 9/11, when it wasn't even close.
