First world war (1914 - 1918): 15,000,000 people killed.
Russian Civil War (1917-22): 9 000 000 killed
Soviet Union, Stalin's regime (1924-53): 20 000 000 killed
Second World War (1939 - 45): 55 000 000 killed.
The Bubonic plague (1665): 2 000 000 killed.
Point being: every year brings misery.

What an utterly ridiculous thing to say.
why is it? has been a pretty crappy year so far, just second to 2001 at the moment in my book.
back on topic, I don't see how they can eke more than a season out of Lost, I thought it was more of a mini-series of the kind done countless times before.
