Could someone tell about Windows 2000, Windows 98 and MS-DOS?

I need to comparing and contrasting their use and talk about what each of them are. What are their main strengths and weaknesses.

Don't ask - just help :D

windows 00 has more ram units which can process quicker and has a larger mainframe in the motherboard which can hold more memory per unit

on 2nd thoughts mate I'd have to say Windows 2000 provides an integrated, comprehensive and easy-to-use solution to windows. Windows 2000 , like Windows NT 4.0, has been designed from the ground up as an integrated multipurpose operating system. Not like that un-integrated services, Windows 2000 Server provides complete integration between its services resulting in easier management and lower TCO. For instance, once authenticated to the directory, users don’t need to re-authenticate themselves to access other applications and services.

arg, i typed out a huge reply for you. unfortunately it isn't saved in the PM area on the forums because i deleted them all recently. i think there is a problem with the PM feature because a lot seem to have gone missing. BT have also buggered up my phone & ADSL line so i wont be on again until tis fixed. if chris was feeling generous he could have a look in the database and see if its somewhere in there?

you've given your far share of words lewis.

infact you like to dish them out to everyone - excluding a few of course. we all thought you were like timb, it appears your alright when you want to be. you are scary when you are nice though. too nice... 8)

i agree with you though, we should give people a chance. this chance should also apply in the private area - like a sorta prob'tion period, if they arent good in the private area then they get kicked out. agree?

as a quick summary:

ms-dos is a command line based operating system that is now very old. programs would run on top of it and provide all of the GUI features themselves.

there are two seperate windows cores:

the 9x core is aimed at home desktop PCs. windows allocates pieces of memory to all the programs that you run, but it is possible for them to access each others memory and this is why this windows version is less stable. it also only has a very simple file system in FAT 16 and FAT 32. The 9x line are also meant to be as backwardly compatible as possible. All of the following operating systems are based on this core but it has effectively been discontinued

95 -> 95B -> 98 -> 98SE -> ME

the NT core is aimed at workstations and servers. it allocates much larger sections of memory to programs and actually boxes them in so that they can not interfere with each other. this means increased stability but slightly affects performance. It also supports NTFS a different file system that has more permissions options and other stuff. NT systems are also not very backwardly compatible. This line includes the following operating systems:

NT 4 -> 2000 -> XP

Earlier versions of Windows were not full operating systems because they ran on top of MS-DOS. Windows 95 is also heavily based on DOS and has a DOS shell available. 2k and later systems have an emulated Command Prompt which is basically the same.

Windows XP has replaced the 9x line as being targeted towards home desktop users because microsoft thing the performance is now good enough. it has also introduced backward compatability as much as possible.

i'm sure i've made a few mistakes there so let the nit-picking commence :
