When Chris Moyles announced he was leaving his breakfast show at the BBC in 2012 there was one phrase he kept repeating.
‘We have had the best time ever.’

But who did he mean by ‘we’? Having hailed himself as the ‘Saviour of Radio 1’, he no doubt imagined he was speaking for a vast team of producers, runners, researchers and execs at the station and the wider Beeb.

But that was a matter of opinion because in reality, I am told, by the end of his eight years at the helm the only people still thinking they were having a good time were Moyles himself and a small circle around him who worked overtime to keep a lid on his ‘tw**ish’ and ‘entitled’ behaviour.

‘It was like he got a kick out of making people uncomfortable,’ a former BBC employee told me last night.

While his critics are certainly not making the kind of allegations levelled at his ex-colleague Scott Mills – which have led to Mills being sacked from his plum job as the Radio 2 Breakfast show host – questions are arising as to why the BBC allowed Moyles to spend years behaving in a ‘laddish’ and ‘nasty’ manner.

Some will recall, for example, his endless on-air attacks on the Girls Aloud singer, Nicola Roberts. For six years he called her vile names such as ‘horsey chops’ and a ‘sour-faced old cow’.

They didn't have a problem at the time, and if they had of said something they would have been heard out. This wasn't the 1950s. And the fail is becoming more irrelevant as time goes on anyway.

Recently I've been to see Mark and Lard on one of their live shows. And in an interview with Radcliffe recently he got asked what Mark and Lard would sound like doing a show now. He got on to say that they couldn't do now what they did 25 years ago. And it's not about 'cancel culture' and so on. But he basically said people tend to look for an excuse to be offended now, and I think he's got that spot on.

How Comedy Dave felt 'utterly betrayed' when Chris Moyles was snapped on a family holiday to Cyprus with his estranged wife - as insiders tell DOLLY BUSBY it 'permanently ended' their friendship

Beaming at the camera, their skin pink and clammy from the muggy Cypriot weather and a long evening drinking red wine, they appeared like any group of relaxed holidaymakers.

But the picture, taken in August 2011 outside the Coral Bay bar in Paphos, became a decade-long headache as it brought a ‘betrayal’ to light.

Among the revellers caught in the blurry snap were the BBC Breakfast host, Chris Moyles, and his Radio 1 sidekick’s wife, Jayne Sharp – who was without her husband, Dave Vitty, better known as Comedy Dave.

Five months earlier, Vitty had announced he was divorcing Jayne, his wife of three years, with whom he shares a daughter, Nicole, now 19. So it might have seemed strange that she was now popping up on a family holiday with Moyles.

Also on the booze-fuelled trip were Moyles’s brother, Kieron, and his sister-in-law, Kerry.

While there was no suggestion that anything romantic had taken place between the pair, it was still enough to ‘permanently end’ Vitty’s relationship with both parties.
