I wanted to download shows from 2008 and they weren't in the archive thread so I had to search this thread for them! Found them eventually though

Out of curiosity, Are the 2008 edits O.K.? I know there not up to the standard of ianpwilliams or bmstinton93 but are they good. I'm slightly worried that they are not up to scratch (Part ego, part genuine curisoty asking).

P.s: It's a sad time when I start putting last ever.. instead of just the day or guest or place name. I'm really not looking forward to putting last ever Breakfast show in my library of shows. And a year from now I'll have to put "Last ever Radio 1 show" on it.

They seem fine to me. It would be nice if you were able to put fades in at the edit points, but I know that isn't possible with all software, and that it's also time-consuming. But really I'm only fussy about having fades when I do edits myself. When it comes to other people's edits, I'm just glad that someone took the time to do them, which I'm guessing is most people's opinion.

Absolutely. I download every show that is added and I am grateful for every one of them.

The 4th Sep 2009 show that I grabbed from archive.org to do the Dave Indian Loyalty edit had the Robbie Williams interview edited out. Was that deliberate? Are other interviews cut out?

Ian, can you check the ask Aled thread please and possibly put together a list of all the missing shows? Or actually, Jamie weren't you working on some sort of project like that?

[ianpwilliams]

As far I remember, lots of my 2009 shows were incomplete. This is because I used to listen live back then, but only to some of the show, so I edited the part that I hadn't listened to live. I'm sure that Jamie sent 2009 full shows to someone to edit though, so I think the idea is that those will replace them.

If someone can update the archive again then I can have a go at comparing my list and the archive list (I'm pretty sure some got uploaded to IA but went missing from the list). Once that's done, maybe we can somehow work out which ones we are missing.

I haven't really been part of the conversation, but if Aled has WAVs of every show, would we not want to archive all of them? I've been listening to some 2004 shows and the quality is pretty low.

Why not give Aled a blank USB hard drive and ask for all the shows? I can help out with this if you need help.

Cheers!

[bmstinton93]

Could be a good idea. Do you have one you would be prepared to send to Aled? Personally I'd like unedited versions of all these as well.

[ianpwilliams]

Well yeah, that would be the ideal solution! If they are all WAVs though, then it would require a pretty massive hard drive. But personally I would love to have every show. Actually, I would love to have an edited version of every show. And I would definitely be prepared to buy a hard drive.

[ianpwilliams]

So who's going to take the plunge and "Ask Aled"? Shouldn't it be "Archive" Johnny? Or "Website" Chris?

[bmstinton93]

I think whoever wants to take control of it can.

[bmstinton93]

Well Johnny has given Nic permission to update the archive.

I believe uncompressed wavs work out to be around 10.6MB per minute.

My calculation makes it:

((((3 * 60) + 35) * 10.6) / (1000 * 1000)) * ((46 * 5) * (8 + (8 / 12))) = 4.54280667

4.5TB. Losslessly compressed (FLAC or maybe even RAR), all the shows may fit on one 3TB drive, or may need a 3TB drive if transferring them uncompressed. So we would need to invest in a 3 or 4TB drive. (£110 to £175).

That seems a small price to pay. I don't have a spare drive that size or spare cash right now, but maybe someone can step up?

We'd need some info from Aled on file size per show and number of shows to make an exact calculation.

I've tidied the first post up to put it in chronological order and make it look a bit neater, I've also split out the Mark & Lard archive to another thread entirely.

[Nicola_Red]

I'll do the archive thread this evening - it's too fiddly to do whilst at work.

[Travis Bickle]

So if Aled puts the sited on a hard drive how would you go about sharing them on here? Put then on in full or edit them?

If money is an issue I am more than prepared to contribute to it, or even pay the lot if needs be. (within reason!)

[bmstinton93]

Presume we'd just do what we have been doing so far and uploading them to archive.

[Nicola_Red]

We could set up a paypal account and take donations for the hard drive - I'm sure lots of people would be willing to contribute.

[ianpwilliams]

That's a good idea. And we would need to either pass the drive around to get the shows from it for editing, or nominate someone would would be prepared to upload them for editing.

I also think that we should prioritize editing the missing shows first, and then we can decide on which of the lower-quality ones we want to re-edit.

This is all assuming that Aled has all the shows, and that he is prepared to give them away

[Nicola_Red]

he's said in the AA thread that he will

[ianpwilliams]

Wow, excellent news

[Nicola_Red]

I know! He only has them as WAV files though, hence the discussion about getting hold of a big enough hard drive. A stupid question: how physically big and heavy is something like that? Is it gonna cost a fortune to post?

[ianpwilliams]

Well WAV files are perfect, because they are the best quality you can get, and they will work on PC or Mac. Speaking of which, if we do get a drive, then we should format it in FAT32 so it works on both PC and Mac. As long as all the files are under 4GB each then we will be fine doing FAT32.

As for the physical hard drive size - you can get 2TB ones now (possibly even bigger) that are really small:

[Nicola_Red]

That's good. So we need to PM Aled and ask him if he's okay with the plan of sending him a hard drive and him then returning it to us. If he is, we need to compile the list of missing shows, and I can set up a donation thing to buy it. How does that sound to everyone?

[bmstinton93]

Sounds good yeah although if we're gonna do that we may as well just get all the shows.
