I thought they based the grading on what the average marks were of the students? Like if the top mark was 70% then A would be 60%+?

Well I think they do but usually there is a standard one but I think its more that if it is a particularly bad paper and lots of people have struggled then they would maybe add 10% to everyone's marks but I'm not really sure.
