Sorry to hear that charlalottie. Maybe it'll help to know you're not alone - I'm starting again with the job hunt too

SO ANNOYED!!!!!

So, here comes my email....

"We are very sorry, but you are a big smelly * so you can't have tickets to Radio 1's Big Weekend, BUT TO REALLY RUB IT IN, the bloke who sits facing you at work, we'll give 'em to him....."

I've not wanted to punch anyone in the face this much for a long time. The smug git says they're mine for £50 each. What a *.

Annoying me...... getting another bloody tree preservation order through the post, 14 months after the last one, with a letter saying "ooops we did that one wrong, better send another!"

Oh dear, what's wrong Yuds? Get well soon

I just have a horrid sinusy head cold, I'm fine. Just need some sleep, but I fear that may be off the cards having been woken up to take a phone call - see Smile thread for details!

Annoying me today - The car that I had saved for and brought on Wednesday turns out not to be quite as good as I first thought. I guess that teaches me for trusting people I don't know. I am so angry! :-x

Why wasssup Andy?

Was it bought private or trade?

Private... The guy said it only needed the brake lights sorting out for the MOT which isn't a big job. Put it in for the MOT yesterday, turns out it needs a bit of welding on a rear suspension mount, a new break calliper on the rear, front discs and pads, exhaust blow repairing, so far £500 worth of work. Guess thats going back on Ebay when I get the Log Book. So gutted!!

To be fair, the caliper and rear susp mount may not have been obvious. Brake discs/pads and a blowing exhaust should be pretty clear. Much as I hate to say it, but more as advice to anyone else reading this, never, ever buy a car with no recent MOT. It costs £25-45 for the seller and shows confidence in the product. Sorry Andy.

Have you considered doing the work yourself? Are you at all competant with a spanner?! Do you have access to a decent tool kit?

You should really only need a garage to do the welding work, the rest is all pretty basic stuff.... Price for parts only will be way less than £500. I'd suggest a new caliper may be overkill too, I can't see how a simple re-build wouldn't sort any problem with that. Dunno what car it is, but i've priced it in my head at less than £200 for parts, but probably a whole days labour to sort it all.

It you weren't so far away i'd put in a price to sort it all for you, sorry dude, but Crawley is outa my juristiction.

Thank dim!

A good friend has his own garage near me and I know he would be honest. The problem with it is that the rear caliper is busted, but they are in-board brakes and are a nightmare to do, the front discs and pads aren't easier on them either! It's an old Jag XJS so not the nicest car to work on! It's more labour time than parts that's putting the price up. I am quite confident with a spanner, but no, I don't have a decent tool kit.

Oh, sorry Andy, I was assuming Escort/Astra etc, you are very right in saying an old XJ is a completely different game..... Half the battle with mechanics is having the right tools for the job. Once you have a £2k tool chest, most jobs are possible youself.

With that in mind i'm unable to offer more advise, although all i'd say is think about getting the work done instead of just getting rid straight away. If you do, your still gonna need some wheels, and although needing to spend £500 may be a kick in the clankers, you are potentially gonna have this problem with any other car you purchase. At least with this XJ, its is car you obviously want and you are now fully aware of its evils. Getting shot and buying something else may just land you with an even bigger bill next month....

All cars cost money to maintain, the newer the more expensive. If you mate owns the garage, could you not maybe discuss payment terms with him, like split it £250/£250? Just a thought...

This car was supposed to be a cheap 'toy' for the next couple of years, to drive in the summer. I have an every day car which is why I didn't want to spend much on it. I have an older XJS which was my pride and joy but unfortunately it is now dead and isn't worth repairing. The one I brought on Wednesday was going to replace it, but as it turns out I am not so sure that's going to happen. The good thing about the 'new' one is that it is rare, so hopefully will be easier to sell, to an enthusiast or something. I will speak to him to see if he can do something on the payment, am sure it will be fine with him... I am going to his garage on Saturday so we can go over everything it needs and to make sure there is nothing bigger lying beneath the paintwork!

Oh, I'm surprised you don't drive, I don't know why - does the missus? If neither of you do, that must make things difficult.

(P.S. Wrong thread.)

oops!

The wife drives.

I did 30 hours of driving when I was 17 and should have booked my test, but moved up country and then never got round to doing it, then when I moved back to Devon I started driving lessons again, but then Edward was born and I changed jobs and it once again got moved to the back burner. So I have booked a 20hour intensive course with a test at the end.....*fingers crossed*
