Maybe I'm a little late on this bandwagon, I'm not sure. Now we all know what monumental pricks the tabloid press are, but I've just been reading something that totally takes the biscuit... those * over at the Sunday Express apparently ran a big article on survivors from the Dunblane massacre turning 18 and behaving like.. er, teenagers. Wow shocking, someone survived a shooting and has grown up to like a night out and a drink!

To be honest, there is little that I can say about this that this blog hasn't already said, I agree with him entirely, but it's still atrocious that such an article could be written, let alone published. The two subsequent related blog posts that are linked from that one are worth reading too - he is surely absolutely correct in saying that these kids behaving normally is a good thing - it shows they've moved on and are trying to get on with their lives! The author of this article is a * imbecile and should be disciplined - but undoubtedly won't be.

I'm in too fragile a state to read that, Tofu. That was the worst story I can ever remember. That and that poor Jamie Bulgar one. Anyone that could come out of either of those ordeals and lead a 'normal' life should be left alone to continue to lead it. Not passed judgment on. Some people are dicks.

I set fire to that particular soapbox last week and the bandwagon rolled outta town shortly after. I think I am right in saying that the woman who wrote it is being investigated by some watchdoggy people? Offcom for newspapers or summit.

The Press Complaints Commission are looking into it... there are some problems with this though, that are explained better by the comedy writer Graham Linehan in his blog. (The whole blog is worth reading, but I've quoted the bit in question because it appears quite a way down:

The press likes us to believe they’re a properly regulated body, but they’re anything but. First of all, The PCC seems to be a completely toothless organisation by design. It is made up of representatives of the major publishers, who are obviously not inclined to be too hard on themselves. Also, unlike Ofcom and the Advertising Standards Authority, who have easy-to-use complaint forms on their websites, the PCC don’t even accept third party complaints - in other words, unless you are the person named in a printed article, they’re not interested in hearing your opinion. So when faced with an affront to our humanity (which is what I believe this Express story is), there is no official channel for us to register our anger. That’s right - if you are offended by something on TV, Radio or in an advert, you can complain; if you’re offended by something in the print press…well, you’re just going to have to walk it off, because literally no-one wants to know.

I feel exactly the same. Last year I accidentally read an account of Jamie Bulger's case which wasn't made public at the time because it was so distressing (someone sent it to me in an email at work and I didn't realise what it was until it was too late) - I didn't sleep for four days and I cried constantly for the first two. So I won't be reading the piece - but I agree with your and Sunny's basic conclusion - anything approaching normality should be treasured and celebrated after something like that.
