It seems a survey of 1,400 British people who regularly use the internet showed that 41% fear cyber theft more than burglarly (29%) and robbery (11%).

One in three people have now been affected by some kind of cyber theft.

My mum will not put her credit card details online despite me telling her that surely it must be safer to shop completly by computer (where granted, it has happened that details can be stolen) than it is in a shop where you are handing your credit card to a random person and letting them have the chance to copy down the details. Same goes for someone looking over your shoulder in the queue behind you.

Also, I think most credit card companies now give an online promise that if you are a victim of online fraud, you are insured against it.

I was almost "done" by someone posing as "Paypal" (it wasn't paypal). They've had another shot at me just a few weeks ago, but not a chance!!

Ahh, now I should probably also point out that if people are going to shop online, then they should also have the knowledge of how to do so. They should know the warning signs about where they should and shouldn't be putting their card details.

I get an email regularly from "my bank" telling me that my account is going to be suspended within the next 24 hours if I dont sign in immediatly. I am then provided with a link to "my bank"s website. I know fine well that if I click that link, I will see a website that will look exactly the same as my banks, but i'm pretty sure that if I stick my password in there, it could end in disaster.

It's ridiculous, foots. The paypal one I got told me I had made a transaction in dollars on e-bay!! And I never take anything to do with e-bay. I actually got advice from Yuds on this site about it. They had another shot a few weeks ago, asking me for details, which I was supposed to supply to a blank screen. Not a chance.

So the first time when they said you'd been using ebay and asked for details/payments (despite you having not used ebay) , did you give them to what they wanted?

As a general rule, don't trust emails claiming to be from institutions who hold personal details for you and ask you to click a link to their web site, it's almost certainly a phishing attempt. As far as I'm aware, most genuine emails just ask you to "go to our web site and login", rather than linking to it. That way you have to manually get to the site, thus ensuring you aren't unknowingly redirected to the scammers' site.
