Last time I went to Birmingham I was very impressed, it was lovely. But I only saw the bit right in the middle around the NEC. I go to Sheffield a lot, I have family there, and I find it really drab, dirty and depressing. Although the Botanical Gardens are lovely, and some of the parks are brilliant, if you can avoid the homicidal squirrels. The city centre is terrible though (if you can find it). I haven't been to Liverpool since 1985 - and it reminded me of Beirut, only the rubble hadn't been created by a war, it was just the way it was. I understand things have changed there greatly. Manchester is a good city. I love London though, I loved it when I lived there, and now I love to visit. I think its the way age and historical significance of the place sits so beautifully next to the contemporary landscape. That being said, the principles Gaspode outlines are absolutely correct, and those are some of the many reasons I was dead against having the Olympics in London in the first place.
