If the Mac is anything as confusing as my ipod, then i am never switching. Do Macs come with instructions as to how to use it without having to go on t'internet?

Why did apple make switching on a ipod so difficult? If America can manage to instigate world war 3 than surely a simple on/off button on an mp3 player isn't a high order?

Macs are quite easy to install (comes with full instructions) and use, and have some built in help menu's to help you get around without accessing the internet.

My G5 is the most unstable thing I have ever seen! This XP machine crashes less!

I know two seperate Macs that quite often crash when encoding video and all the fans over-run like mad....seriously not as impressed with them as I thought I would be.

I know a few people which use the G5 video production on a regular low scale commercial basis with little problems.

Apple can be quite frugal on the memory front which may contribute towards your problem.

stevo's right that they are good for some people. my parents almost bought a new mac, but opted for their first pc ever because of price. my boyfriend/partner uses a mac at work, but he's testing/running simulations on the last g5 powerpc processor.

People have mentioned viruses and malware, and often say oh get Linux or OSX because they never get viruses. Well this is sort of true. People who write MalWare, viruses, Trojans and worms are looking for maximum impact, this is achieved by achieving maximum network penetration, (by network i refer to the world wide network). If their virus software was targeted at Mac software flaws (and believe me there are many) or Linux software flaws (even easier due to the open source nature) then they cannot achieve a large scale network penetration, because there are not many Macs / Linux machines that are connected together without a PC being in between. For this reason it is far more successful to target the windows architecture because of its widespread use and connectivity. If the world was different and full of Macs then this argument would be reversed.

I do like linux though because they have a cute logo

I truely love that argument, because it assumes that, for whatever reason, Windows' complete lack of security and privelage seperation isn't to blame for the vast number of viruses and other malware that infect it.

Exactly. My mate wants one rather than a PC because they "look smarter".

You can't possibly say which is better, its your own choice. I personally use a Windows PC but there are many advantages of having a MAC such as:

- Easier Hard Disk Repair
- Easier Restoration of files from Backup.
- Superior Computer Security.
- Fewer viruses
- More stable
- More software can be run simultaneously

There are absolutely loads more advantages of MACs than this just as there are loads of advantages of Windows PC's.

As a Mac user, I will say he should get one!!

I've been using them for 10+ years now and have never had a major problem, although there are always exceptions which you'll find with any piece of technical equipment. For video editing they're widely used in the professional industry, and he should get a copy of Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express which is an excellent editing programme.

With OSX, there's much more software support then ever before making the gap between PCs and Macs smaller. Macs are less prone to internet viruses because Apple don't give out their coding to willy nilly, unlike Microsoft, so people struggle to write viruses for them. The downside of cause is you get less games and stuff for Macs, but most people use Macs for video & graphics work and Moyles seems more of a console man anyways.

Go for the latest iMac or the even newer Mac Pro :D

While the iMacs and Macmini are designed for ease of use and people who aren't that interested in constantly upgrading internal computer components (like me), the Mac pro (formally known as the PowerMac G5) is much more accessible for those you want to muck about with it, although it's so powerful I doubt you'll have to for years to come.

It all depends on what you use your computer for. The whole point of Apple is to get the computer out of the box, plug it in and off you go. I use PCs occasionally and always hate the experience. What the heck does 'an illegal operation' mean anyway?? And several hours to install a new operating system!?!? Takes me 10 minutes to upgrade my OS on my Mac :p

It also depends on what you're used to. Coming from the Art & design industry, Macs are the norm so that's what I'm used to. People who grew up with PCs & Windows would probably feel quite alien when using OSX. I think Moyles can afford to take the risk and buy a Mac and see how it goes....and if he doesn't like it he can give it to me :D

I think you're confusing the 'PC experience' with the 'Windows experiance'

Your right! I much prefer the "This programme has perfomed an error and will now close" had that a few times on a mac. Not had an illegal op on a pc for years!

Well at least you know where you stand with a Mac :p
Me & my friend edited a film on his PC (running on XP) and it performed illegal operations every 5 mins. Happens numerous times with my sister's PC too.

In the end this sums it up nicely:

"At COMDEX recently, Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive, but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again, because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. Oh yeah, and last but not least . . . you'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off!"

Editing gap to come
