You just need a cable which will run from your cassette player to the PC's line in socket on the sound card.

From the cassette player you could use the line out connection, or if non-existant use the headphone socket on a low setting.

To record the audio you can use Audacity (free) from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Hope that helps

Cheers

How on earth do you put files on your CPU?

If you've ever been taught IT at school the "Box" is referred to as the CPU.

It's better than most people which refer to the whole PC as the "hard drive".

Thanks for that guys

CPU = Central Processing Unit

Really, I feel people should be made to take a test before being allowed to buy a computer

Yes Sidders realised that I think, his point being that your files do not actually reside on the CPU though, do they. Would you pass the test..?

i would pass the test with flying colours.

people that are pedantic shouldnt be allowed to take the test at all

The thing is in the real world of IT, the CPU is the processor - in most cases the Intel or AMD chip at the heart of it all.

amd is where it's at! intel is quickly becoming stale and overrated.

It's not at all. Nothing is stored on a CPU. A CPU is the chip which computes all the computers operations. The hard drive is the part of the computer which stores the files, therefore it is far more accurate.

I think you've taken my point out of context there, which is the way that people refer to a PC with the wrong terminology, as opposed to what the difference between a CPU and a hard drive is. My profession is IT and has been for over 7 years, so I'm well versed in the differences between various hardware components and their purpose!

No it's not, that's a ludicrous statement to make. Why on earth would anyone teach such a thing.

In that case you should know that you can't store files on your CPU.

Oh ffs! I was saying

A) IN SCHOOLS IT GCSE IS TAUGHT THAT THE MAIN PC BOX IS REFERRED TO AS THE CPU
B) I KNOW YOU CANNOT STORE FILES ON A CPU. HOWEVER IN THE CONTEXT OF THE ABOVE STATEMENT, ANYONE TAUGHT THIS AT SCHOOL WOULD BELIEVE THAT WHAT THEY ARE SAYING IS CORRECT

I did GCSE IT at school and it was the biggest load of bollocks going, but this is the crap the teach, believe me!!!

All the time.

It's infuriating to be made out to be stupid when at no point have I actually said you can store files on a CPU, in it's correct sense.

ok ok. to get sound from a casette player to your pc is simple...

1. get a line in cable - this looks like a wire with a headphone socket eatch end, these copme with some mp3 players, i have about 3 knocking around now.

2. fint the line in socket on your pc. it looks just like a headphone socket, but its blue! its more likly to be on the back of your pc. find that and then plug the cable into it. then plug the other end into anything you want to record off. this method makes it possable for you to record from anything with a headphone socket

3. now you need some softwear, im not sure if anything comes as standard, maybe you can fecord sound only through windows moviemaker or something. just look on your pc for comething that records sound, i use "creative smart recorder" then in that program, record from the line in cable or somehting

simple enough

CrAzY CoMpUtEr FaCtS

1- that mad ass cpu, dont have files on it fool! its just a load of old transistors man! it just deals with making your programs function, its like the thinking part of the brain dude!

2- the hardrive baby! this has all of your stuff on it, its cool man. all your music, pictures, and all the files that go to make windows and all your other programs work!

3- RAM, not only is this a palendome of mar or a houmerous description of what i do to my girlfriend with my crotch organ! but this is like your memory in your head. its blank, but files are loaded into it when needed, if your looking at a picture, its loaded into the ram so the cpu can work with it, so you end up seeing it. or at least thats what i think

4- you the user, your the moron who works this piece of crap. true computers have a lot of mistakes, and things wrong with them, but alot of problems are your fault! if things arnt working, your a moron and your doing somehting wrong! sort it out!

I'm fairly certain that that isn't true. The teacher you had may have taught that, but it certainly isn't in the syllabus.

I've also never heard anyone refer the the computer as either a CPU or a harddrive. I've heard PC's called windows, Dell (It was a Compaq) and box (actually I call it a box), but never by a hardware name.

It's absurd to suggest in a gcse IT lesson a teacher would teach the "box" is referred to as the CPU. In gcse IT you need to know about the CPU is.

With comments like that RussT we don't need to make you out to be stupid, you do a good enough job yourself.

what russT workd in IT! and your calling him stupid? GCSE it is really shit! and its nothing to out of this world that they refer to the main bit of your pc as "the box" or the "cpu" gcse it is a pile of piss, if youve been using a pc for a year or so, you already know all they can teach you

gsce in IT sounds like utter pish. most IT things sound like utter pish though. it's like the janitors of the computing world. some are very good, but many of those i've encountered are poor programmers and such. sad indeed.

mcqueen is awesome, btw. russt, put your handbag away.

Yeah he's awesome for calling me stupid, whatever.

IT GCSE IS utter pish, I already knew more than the teacher before I started and have NEVER EVER referred back to it through my career at all. I mean why would I when the course teaches you to call a PC a CPU.

it reminds me of the computer class i had to take in high school (almost 10 years ago... :(). i was using a 10 year old mac SE, which was my first computer, and i got yelled at for using short cuts (like apple-s to save...) within the first 15 minutes of class. then my computer caught fire so i dropped out.

when i did gcse it, i actualy wondered how the hell the teacher got the job! we were shown how to select mroe than one box in excel, we were shown how to make a folder, we were shown how to NAME FILES...

...

SOME PEOPLE DIDNT EVEN KNOW HOW TO DO THAT!
