Knowing the general opinion of Rachel on this site (not my personal view)

Have a look at this...

Quater of an hour into the show and she's controlling everything.

Well I'm scared....

Seriously, Rachel segues all the songs when Chris goes out for a smoke. It's always been like that.

Simon Jones?

Chris has always had his producers, teaboys, BA's, bitches.. whatever - segue his songs.

If I were a producer it would annoy me, as its his job surely as the DJ?

Yeah, 'tis me.

Thought I'd say 'Ello.

You'd think the DJs would play the records wouldn't you? It's just pure laziness if you ask me - either that or he's gone off for a fag.

if the bbc want to pay him for it i dont care, he's funny and if the songs are sorted by someone else it doesnt matter it gives the public more of what they like and gives chris a chance to say something funny about them, so I say good on him!

To be honest i always though that songs are sorted before show so it's basicly the matter of pressing the button and the system plays songs and jingles. Thats what i do if i need a fag... just prearange 2 songs and a jingle between press the button and thats it. 10 minutes for me :)

That's about it really, the system they've got at the Beeb is fantastic. You can pre record links while a song is playing out and just drop it in between two songs or whatever and hit the auto button and leave it running if you want. Mate of mine presents a weekend show on BBC local Radio and just pre-records all his links. There's no news, weather, travel or phone-ins, everything is recorded "as-live" so wheneever he wants he leaves his producer behind to make sure the studio doesn't blow up while he nips out to the cafe for some lunch. Got some weird looks when the guy behind the counter realise it was his voice on the radio and he was stood in front of him. Happens all the time, still scary though.

That's pretty much standard across all stations these days, you'd be surprised how much local radio content is pre-recorded/segued, even during the day. Rarely are those stations manned after 6 on a Saturday unless they're specialist shows. Been going on for a few years now, basically since PCs were up to it and the software was developed.

Adobe Audition is the new version of Cool Edit, you melon.

They will be talking about some kind of playout system.

my radio station uses "DADPro" for playing pre-recorded spot liks station IDs and PSAs. it's a system that most commercial stations use to do robot programming, but we're against that.

i always figured the new meaning of DJ, for the most part, is just presenter/talker. they don't actually jock the discs- especially since there don't seem to be any discs.

I's not just pre-recorded spots. As RussT says most radio stations are unmanned after 6 on a saturday, just about the time the sports show finishes. You get your playlist, pre-record the links, drop them in-between the songs, drop in a few jingles, trails etc. and save it. Then some producer put's all the shows in the correct order, hit the Auto button and away you go until 4am on monday.

As I while ago I came back into the country the night Diana died and some station hadn't switched to their Obit tape and was playing out Take That Relight my fire. So it can be a blessing or a curse.

i just said we only use it for prerecorded spots. when we first got the system we had to all do the extensive training on how to make the playlists and how unplayed songs on the playlist won't go away and have some alarm so you can't skip them. a lot of my friends are board operators for commercial stations on nights and weekends and all they due is check the transmitter meters and make sure the computer system plays everything ok. it's dull radio and you can usually tell if it's canned like that.

bring back real djs who actually pick their songs as they go.

Editing gap to come
