New here but the discussion interested me. I only came on to ask when Moyles' appearance on family fortunes is being shown (anyone know?) Hi everyone
Anyway, this sort of talk really annoys me. I'm not racist, homophobic, sexist or any other -ist. I am however in the real world, can take and give a joke equally and like to laugh. We can't keep stopping people making jokes about people, whoever they are. What next, laws against making jokes about ginger people? People from certain cities (maybe we should have laws against scouse-ist behaviour)? I wear glasses and people make jokes all the time. My housemate is 6' 5" and people are constantly making jokes and other comments at him. The fact is everybody makes jokes at the expense of everyone else, and i'm damn glad they do cos if we couldn't life would become very dull very quickly.
What i find odd is that there seem to be these different levels of offence based on what people make comment on. Why is it seen as worse to make a joke at the expense of black people as a whole, than to make jokes at the expense of gays. And why is it worse to make jokes about gays that it is to make them about gingers? I don't understand the logic that says that discriminating against one group is worse than another? Surely that just contradicts the whole equality thing! You are basically saying 'everyone is equal, but you must treat people differently.' A very clever south park episode about race hate crimes put it very well, that by treating crimes differently based on the race of the victim, you are merely perpetuating the idea that black people are different to white people.
As it goes, i am a 25 year old white english male with a degree and a middle class upbringing. I don't think this has any effect on my ability to comment on this though!! I would like to say to chris keep up the good work and don't allow the few to ruin the show for the many!
Rant over
