Dave fell into his role kind of by accident - he studied Radio Production at college, but never had any ambitions to be 'on air'. Whilst working as a 'tech op' at Radio One he met Moyles whom he found he got on with as mates. They went to the pub, threw some ideas around, and eventually an opportunity came up to work as a broadcast assistant on his show. He took it, and the rest as they say is history.

He worked as some sort of engineer on Mark and Lard's breakfast show beforehand, pressing buttons to make sure everything ran smoothly from Manchester to London kind of thing.

I think he also worked behind the scenes on shows with Nicky Campbell, Simon Mayo and Clive Warren before joining Chris..

If you mean what did he do on the show, pretty much the same as he does now. Except he sounded a lot younger.
