Being in Belgrade for a week but being so ill, all I can do is roll from the hotel to the office, sit in front of a pc looking unhealthy for a few hours before rolling back to the hotel. That's annoying me.

That is unlucky, I hear Belgrade is lovely. Feel better soon.

Not so much annoying, but agitating me today - Baby Yudster and Mr Yudster are away for the weekend for Baby Yudster to compete in the Surrey Open squash tournament. Safely through round 2 - quarter final next at about 1pm.....I may have chewed my nails all the way to my elbows by then.

All done. I had it yesterday evening at 6pm. All went quite well. I've had feedback that i'm the best they've seen so far (two seen before me, one to see after). T'was all over and done with pretty quickly, but I suppose being so late in the day they were pretty keen to get home...

Finished runner up in the Under 11. Brilliant result. They played at St Georges Hill - I asked Mr Yudster what the club was like and he replied "....not really for the likes of us!"

Any single resident of St George's Hill, Weybridge could buy Kent as a stocking filler. I've only been there once, years ago - I didn't like it, and I'm not sure why. I don't think I was intimidated by the money, I've got good friends who could easily afford a place there if they wanted, it was more the showiness of it. So polished and - well, opulent. Like Mr Y said - not for the likes of us.

The bit of Surrey I lived in could probably be described as a poor man's Kent. Or a poor man's anything come to that.

St George's Hill is a baffling kind of place anyway. I'm sure the rest of Weybridge is firmly attached to this planet though.

On my interview front there has been a slight development. Obviously I am on contract until mid-Feb. Now, I know this other place want someone to start in Jan, but I said at interview I'd not be available until Feb as I was currently working. They have only got back in touch to say....

"Surely if you are on 3 month contract you are only obliged to give 1 weeks notice and can start mid Jan".

Which i'm not at all happy about. At all. they have confirmed I am the best they saw, yet if I can't start in Jan they don't think they can accommodate me. So, they'd rather have 2nd choice for 12 months than their 1st choice for 11 months... And, not only that, they are expecting me to let someone else down only half way through my commitment. And for what? An extra few £1000's per year?! The project they want me working on would certainly be less interesting, so not exactly sure how they can justify me 'doing the dirty' on this place, what they think their USP is...

But, i'm a deeply loyal person, the idea of letting these down here really doesn't sit well with me so I think I'm gonna tell 'em to Jeff Off and find someone else - I don't want to be that person that jumps ship and burns bridges. Not my style.

The HR department and hiring managers for the position will have targets to meet - but also, missing the first month at the beginning of any project is enough to make the rest of the time less efficient. I'm not sure of your role, but there must be others who would depend on the work you'd do in your first month in order to do their own work?

While difficult, bailing on current project wouldn't bother the other side - and if you're on contract 9 out of 10 times it's all about the benjamins anyway. If you feel it would be too damaging to lose the contacts at your current place of work, don't take the new role.

Dimtimjim, the Matt LeTissier of Chrismoyles.net.

Its still a nice dilemma to have in the present economic climate though. I bet there are thousands that would like it.
The best of luck in whatever you decide, DJT.

not that i'm saying you are wrong in any way, but i'm assuming your statement is a direct response to my post.... So could you enlighten me as to you arrived at that conclusion?

I think i'm right in what I've done, but would gladly welcome other point of view.... Please.

And Chrysostom, I kinda get your point. but if I am significantly better than the other options they saw, I see this as lesser of two evils. Surely they must expect, at an absolute minimum, to have to wait 4 weeks for someone to serve notice elsewhere, no?

11/12 of £1000 is more than 12/12 of £750, for example.

Well, what I mean is...

You should be looking out for you and your family, not loyalty towards a company you probably wont be working for in 3 months time!

The very fact that the firm you interviewed with is not going to alter its requirements to accommodate you should give you the lead in how you respond to your situation. You are a contractor, a temporary member of staff. The firms you work for are not going to change the way they operate to suit you and if you expect them to treat you with the same loyalty and flexibility that you are apparently prepared to give them, you are going to end up very disappointed.

One question - do you want to be secure for the next month, or for the next year?

You don't have to be 100% truthful in your notice either. Use vague but serious reasons like 'a significant change in my personal situation', or 'due to family commitments', and then suffix it with 'i'm leaving you, you cow!'

No need - any employer who takes on contract staff will be unsurprised to hear that such staff would prefer a 12 month contract to a three month one, and used to the idea that if their contractor gets a better offer, they will be taking it.

What Yudster and devilsduck said - were I in your position, I'd have no issues coming to the conclusion that the 12 month contract would be better for ME and my family. Therefore, I would have no issues - despite the fact that I also hate letting people down - in going for it. If they needed to get rid of you, they'd do it in a way that's most efficient for them and your loyalty and feelings would not come into it - you should return that sentiment in my opinion. If I were you, I'd go for the 12 month contract like a shot and if in a month's time, a permanent position was subsequently offered to me, I'd go for that too.
