The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)

Today's Transcript:

Last time was Bing Crosby 'Silent Night'. 'Silent Night' is a song you'd associate with Christmas, which is a time for giving presents. Presents are traditionally stored under a tree, which have roots. 'Roots' rhymes with 'boots', which are what you wear on your feet. Feet is an imperial unit of measurement, as are inches and pounds. Pounds sterling is the currency in Great Britain. Great Britain is a collection of islands joined to Europe by the Channel Tunnel. A tunnel would ordinarily be very dark. Dark is a word associated with chocolate. Chocolate contains a lot of sugar, which can make you fat. 'Fat Of The Land' was an album by The Prodigy, which links to The Prodigy and 'No Good (Start The Dance)'.

Flaws:

As Aled pointed out, Great Britain is strictly speaking an island rather than a collection of islands.

Pulp - Do You Remember The First Time

Today's Transcript:

The Prodigy feature the talents of Keith Flint. Flint is a town in North Wales. North Wales is where you'd find Holyhead, which is an ideal place to catch a ferry to Ireland. Ireland, first name Steven, plays for Manchester City. Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce has the same surname as Radio 1's Dave Pearce, who hosts Dance Anthems. Anthems of a different type are played at sporting events such as the Olympics, where you might win gold. 'Gold' was a hit for Spandau Ballet. Spandau Ballet featured Martin Kemp, who used to play Steve Owen in 'Eastenders' before he left to advertise sofas. Sofas are also sometimes called couches. The word 'couch' comes from the French 'coucher', which means 'to sleep'. France is where Jarvis * from Pulp now lives, which links to Pulp and 'Do You Remember The First Time'.

Flaws:

Seamless, although Dave was unable to check as the texts and emails were off for the pub quiz.

Michael Jackson, Man In The Mirror

Today's Transcript:

Pulp are fronted by Jarvis C0cker, who shares the same surname as another Sheffield singer, Joe C0cker. Joe C0cker got to number one in 1968 with 'With A Little Help From My Friends', which was later used on the credits for 'The Wonder Years', which charted the younger years of Kevin Arnold, played by Fred Savage. Savage Garden were an Australian duo who had several mediocre hits including 'To The Moon And Back'. 'To the moon and back' is how you might describe the journey made in 1969 by astronaut Neil Armstrong. Neil Armstrong shares the same surname as Lance Armstrong, who's the other half of Sheryl Crow. Sheryl Crow's lowest point was probably her ill-advised cover version of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' by Guns N' Roses. Guns N' Roses' guitarist Slash is now in Velvet Revolver, and also played the solo on 'Black Or White' by Michael Jackson, which links to Michael Jackson and 'Man In The Mirror'.

Flaws:

Some texters disputed that Joe C0cker is from Sheffield, but he definitely is, so all fine today.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Under The Bridge

Today's Transcript:

A mirror is something that can reflect light. Light is the opposite of heavy in the world of weight. Weight is measured using scales. Scales of a different type are found on some reptiles, like lizards and stuff. Lizards have long tongues which can catch flies. Flies can be a nuisance, especially to residents of Australia, who have anti-fly hats with corks attached to them with bits of string. Strings are an important part of the orchestra, along with brass. Brass monkeys is a popular expression which refers to it being cold. 'Cold Mountain' was a recent movie starring Renee Zellwegger. Cold mountains are the sort of places normally only inhabited by sheep and goats. Goats often live in groups, like the Three Billy Goats Gruff, who wanted to get across the bridge but kept getting stopped by a troll who lived under the bridge, which links to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and 'Under The Bridge'.

Flaws:

Watertight today.

Tedious Facts:

Technotronic, Pump Up The Jam

Today's Transcript:

'Under The Bridge' was covered in 1998 by All Saints. All Saints included the two Appleton sisters. Sisters of Mercy originally included Wayne Hussey before he left to form The Mission. This year sees the release of 'Mission Impossible 3', starring Tom Cruise, who was in '*'. The soundtrack to '*' featured 'Kokomo' by the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson was the inspiration behind the song 'Brian Wilson' by the Barenaked Ladies. The Barenaked Ladies' biggest hit was entitled 'One Week', which we've performed with them onstage at Wembley Arena. 'Arena' was a live album by Duran Duran, who performed at last summer's Live Aid concert in Rome, which is the capital of Italy. Italy is where Technotronic are from, which links to Technotronic and 'Pump Up The Jam'.

Flaws:

Technotronic are actually Belgian. And thus the whole link falls apart.

Chic - Good Times

Today's Transcript:

Jam is what you might put on your toast. 'Toast' rhymes with 'coast', as in the coastguard, who rescues you from the sea. 'Sea Of Love' is a film starring Al Pacino. Al Pacino shares the same first name as Al Murray, the Pub Landlord. Pub landlords tend to be found behind the bar. A bar of a different type is a measure of atmospheric pressure, which can rise and drop. 'Drop The Pressure' is a track by Milo. Milo is the name of one of The Tweenies, which is a programme for kids. Kids is also a word for baby goats. Goats eat grass, a bit like cows. Cows are sacred in India, where it's hot, as it is in Egypt. Egypt is where you'd find the Nile. Nile Rodgers was the guitarist in Chic, which links to Chic and 'Good Times'.

Flaws:

Seamless link.

REM - Orange Crush

Today's Transcript:

Chic's Nile Rodgers has produced albums for Madonna, while drummer Tony Thompson went on to be in The Power Station with Robert Palmer. Robert Palmer is probably best known for his hit 'Addicted To Love', the video for which featured loads of models. Loads of models were also featured in the video for 'Too Funky' by George Michael. George Michael used to be in Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley. Andrew Ridgeley likes to race cars, a bit like Shane Lynch from Boyzone. Shane Lynch is the brother of Adele and Keavy from B*Witched. B*Witched's debut single was 'C'est La Vie', which means "that's life". 'That's Life' was a TV show hosted by Esther Rantzen, which also featured Doc Cox. 'Cox' is a word associated with apples, which are a popular fruit, as are oranges. If you crush oranges you'd get orange crush, which links to REM and 'Orange Crush'.

Flaws:

Nothing to report.

Tedious Facts:

Young Disciples - Apparently Nothin'

Today's Transcript:

REM are fronted by Michael Stipe, who, at last summer's Live 8 concert, painted his face blue. 'Blue Hotel' was a hit for Chris Isaak. Chris Isaak was in 'Silence Of The Lambs' with Jodie Foster. Foster is when you take in someone else's kids to live with you, like Pippa in 'Home and Away'. Home and away are the two options in one of the rounds in 'A Question of Sport'. 'A Question of Sport' is hosted by Sue Barker, who shares the same first name as Sue Jenkins, who played Jackie Corkhill in 'Brookside' and is the mum of Richard Fleishman from 'Coronation Street'. People in 'Coronation Street' drink in the Rovers. 'Rovers' follows Bristol and Blackburn i the world of football. Blackburn isn't too far from Blackpool, which is famous for its beach, a bit like Malibu. Malibu was the setting for the tv series 'Baywatch', which starred Pamela Anderson. Pamela Anderson shares the same surname as Carleen Anderson from the Young Disciples, which links to Young Disciples and 'Apparently Nothin''.

Flaws:

Home or away is the game on 'A Question of Sport'. Dave was also confused as to the difference between adoption and fostering, but he was correct in saying that fostering is taking in other people's kids, he just omitted to add that it means on a temporary basis, as opposed to adoption which is permanent.

Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby

Today's Transcript:

Young Disciples' Carleen Anderson shares the same surname as Brett Anderson of Suede. 'Suedehead' was a hit for Morrissey, who used to be in The Smiths. Smiths is a name you'd associate with crisps, which are sold in bags, as is sugar. 'Sugar Sugar' was a hit for the Archies in 1969. 1969 was the year that Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon. Moon is the surname of 'Eastenders' character Alfie, who's played by former Redcoat Shane Richie. Shane Richie used to be married to one of The Nolans. The Nolans had a hit in 1979 with 'I'm In The Mood For Dancing', while 'Dancing Queen' topped the charts three years earlier for Abba. Abba were from Sweden, as is Stefan Edberg. Stefan Edberg beat Boris Becker to win the Wimbledon men's singles final in 1988, although Boris got his revenge the following year in 1989. 1989 was also the year that Madonna released 'Like A Prayer'. Madonna once had a bunk-up with Vanilla Ice, which links to Vanilla Ice and 'Ice Ice Baby'.

Flaws:

Shane Richie was a Bluecoat, not a Redcoat.

Tori Amos - Professional Widow (Remix)

Today's Transcript:

'Ice Ice Baby' was released in 1990, the same year that 'Mona' was a hit for Craig McLachlan & Check 1-2. Craig McLachlan used to play Henry in 'Neighbours', whose mum Madge was played by Anne Charleston. The Charlston is a type of dance that was popular in the 1930s. The 1930s was also the heyday of Everton legend William Ralph Dean, who holds the record of scoring 60 League goals in a season. The seasons is a collective term for winter, spring, summer and autumn. Autumn is known to the Americans as fall. Falling is one of the biggest fears you would have if you were a trapeze artist. Trapeze artist was the occupation of the father of former Prime Minister John Major, who was a Tory, which links to Tori Amos and 'Professional Widow'.

Flaws:

The Charlston was popular in the 1920s more than the 30s.

Oasis - Some Might Say

Today's Transcript:

Tori Amos plays piano and is a bit weird, and in that respect shares something in common with Kate Bush. Kate Bush shares the same surname as George W Bush, who is President of America. America is where 50 Cent is from. 50 Cent is mates with Eminem, who has a daughter called Hailie. Hayley Mills is the mother of Crispian Mills from Kula Shaker. Kula Shaker had a hit with 'Hey Dude', which is what you might say if you're a surfer in Hawaii. Hawaii was the setting for the TV series 'Magnum', which starred Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck was also in 'Three Men And A Baby' with Ted Danson. Ted Danson shares the same surname as Jane Danson, who plays Leanne Battersby in 'Corrie'. 'Corrie' is made in Manchester, which is where Oasis are from, which links to Oasis and 'Some Might Say'.

Flaws:

The Hawaii-set TV show starring Tom Selleck was actually called 'Magnum, P.I.', but otherwise seamless.

Jurassic 5 - Concrete Schoolyard

Today's Transcript:

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher goes out with Nicole Appleton, who according to reports is getting back together with her All Saints friends, while the cast of 'Friends' are also getting back together to film a series of one-ff specials to be aired next year. Next year will be 2007, and if you add up the numbers that make up 2007 you get 9. 9 is the number that Dean Ashton will wear when he makes his debut for West Ham, who last night beat Fulham. Fulham are owned by Mohammed Al Fayed, who is from Egypt. Egypt is where you'd find the pyramids, which are one of the seven wonders of the world, along with the Great Wall of China. China took back Hong Kong from the British in 1997, although Hong Kong is still an ideal place to stop off en route to Australia. Australia has produced many actors including Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill. Sam Neill was in 'Jurassic Park', and if you remove the 'Park' from 'Jurassic Park' and replace it with a 5 you get Jurassic 5, which links to Jurassic 5 and 'Concrete Schoolyard'.

Flaws:

Sam Neill was in fact born in Ireland and brought up in New Zealand, so not Australian at all.

TLC - Waterfalls

Today's Transcript:

Concrete schoolyard is what most children play on in areas that are regarded as urban. Urban, first name Keith, is the fellow that Nicole Kidman is getting married to. When people agree to marry one another, you describe them as being engaged. Engaged is also a word associated with telephones. Telephones are a great way of keeping in touch, cos it's great to talk. 'Talk' was a recent hit for Coldplay, whose singer Chris Martin has a daughter called Apple. Apples are what some people bob for at Halloween. Halloween is also when kids dress up as ghosts and witches. 'The Witches of Eastwick' was a film starring Susan Sarandon. Susan Sarandon starred alongside Gina Davies in 'Thelma & Louise', where at the end they drove off a cliff. If you were in a kayak and saw the river equivalent of a cliff you'd be seeing a waterfall, which links to TLC and 'Waterfalls'.

MC Hammer - U Can't Touch This

Today's Transcript:

Waterfalls can be used to generate hydro-electric power. Power, first name John, was the lead singer of the band Cast. 'Cast No Shadow' is one of my favourite Oasis tracks, and is taken from the album 'What's the Story, Morning Glory'. "What's the story, morning glory" is an expression linked to wood. Wood is what a lumberjack chops with his axe. If you add an 'L' to the end of 'axe' you get 'axel', as in Axl Rose, who is the lead singer of Guns N' Roses. Guns N' Roses had long hair, as did Samson, who was a character in the Bible. The Bible is the best-selling book of all time. Time is what is shown on a clock. Clock had a 1998 hit with 'Blame It On The Boogie', which was originally a hit for the Jacksons. Michael Jackson released 'Black or White' in 1991, the same year that 'Addams' Groove' was a hit for MC Hammer, which links to MC Hammer and 'U Can't Touch This'.

Flaws:

Adding an 'L' to the word 'axe' does not make Axl Rose's name.

U2 - Even Better Than The Real Thing (Perfecto Mix)

Today's Transcript:

MC Hammer was famous for his baggy trousers. 'Baggy Trousers' was a hit for Madness, who are fronted by Suggs, who does the voiceover for the Quote You Happy adverts. Adverts can be on the tv, radio or even in magazines. Magazines are something that you might read on the toilet. If you remove the 'I' from 'toilet' you get 'to let', which is what you might see written on a sign advertising rental property. 'Property Ladder' is a tv show hosted by Sarah Beeny. Beenie Man is a ragga star famous for penning the classic line "zim zimmer, who's got the keys for my bimmer", which is street jive for "who's got the keys to my BMW". 'BMW' stands for Bavarian Motor Works, and the logo features a plane's propellor. Propellorhead had a hit with 'History Repeating', which featured the vocal talents of Shirley Bassey. Shirley Bassey is from Wales, as is The Edge from U2, which links to U2 and 'Even Better Than The Real Thing'.

Today's Transcript:

The 'Even Better Than The Real Thing' Perfecto Mix was done by Paul Oakenfold, who is a top DJ, a bit like Pete Tong. The plural of tong is tongs, which are used in the world of salad. salad is a good food if you're trying to be healthy. Healthy eating shouldn't just be a short term fad. but a way of life. 'Way Of Life' was a hit for Family Dogg. Dogg, first name Snoop, is a major player in the world of rap. 'Rap Dis' was a hit for Oxide & Neutrino, who used to be in So Solid Crew. So Solid Crew launched the career of Harvey, who goes out with Alesha from Mis-Teeq. Mis-Teeq were promoted by Tony Byrne, who shares the same surname as David Byrne from Talking Heads. Talking Heads had a hit with 'Road To Nowhere'. A road to nowhere is what you might be on if you ended up on a dirt track towards a farm, which links to The Farm and 'All Together Now'.

SWV - Right Here

Today's Transcript:

'All Together Now' was re-released by Everton in 1995, to celebrate their FA Cup win over Manchester United. Manchester United have been drawn in the fifth round against Liverpool, who've just re-signed Robbie Fowler. Robbie Fowler owns lots of property. Property is the main area of expertise of Channel 4 presenters Kirstie and Phil. Phil is a name that links singers Collins and Bailey, who collaborated on the 1995 hit 'Easy Lover'. Phil Bailey then followed up with the single 'Walking On The Chinese Wall'. The Great Wall of China is one of the only man-made objects that is visible from space. Space is the final frontier. 'Frontier Psychiatrist' was a hit for The Avalanches. Avalanches tend to happen in snowy mountainous areas, where it would be advantageous to drive a 4x4. A 4x4 is known in the States as a Sports Utility Vehicle or SUV. If you change the 'U' in SUV for a 'W' you get SWV, which links to SWV and 'Right Here'.

Flaws:

Many texters contested Dave's assertion that the Great Wall of China can be seen from space, and an argument ensued as to the definition of 'space'. According to NASA's website (and they should know), the Wall generally isn't visible from space, at least to the unaided eye in low Earth orbit, and it certainly isn't visible from the Moon. However, you can see the wall in radar images taken from space.

Foo Fighters - Monkey Wrench

Today's Transcript:

SWV actually stands for 'sisters with voices'. Voices are what you might hear in your head if you were going mad. 'Mad World' was originally a hit for Tears For Fears, but was covered by Gary Jules. Jules Verne wrote '20,000 Leagues Under The Sea'. The sea is where whales are found, rather than rivers like the Thames. Thames was the TV company that made 'Minder'. 'Minder' starred Dennis Waterman, who used to go out with Rula Lenska, off of 'Big Brother'. The term 'Big Brother' was first used by George Orwell. Orwell is the name of the river that flows through Ipswich, who last night drew one-all with Leeds. One-all was also the score between Wigan and Everton, with both sides reduced to ten men. 'Ten' was the debut album by Pearl Jam, who were a Seattle-based band, a bit like Nirvana. Nirvana were the band that launched the career of Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighers, which links to the Foo Fighters and 'Monkey Wrench'.

They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul

Today's Transcript:

A monkey wrench is what the Americans call a spanner. A spanner is what you'd use to tighten your nuts. 'Nuts' is the name of a lads' magazine. A magazine of a different type is what you'd find inside a machine gun. A machine gun is something you're not allowed to take on an aeroplane, a bit like fireworks. Fireworks are what you might buy on bonfire night, which commemorates the burning of Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. The Houses of Parliament feature on bottles of HP Sauce, cos that's what the 'HP' stands for. HP sauce is brown. Brown, first name Gordon, is Chancellor of the Exchequr and compared to someone like Ronnie Corbett, would look like something of a giant. When you think of the word 'giant' in the context of American bands from yesteryear you think of They Might Be Giants, which links to They Might Be Giants and 'Birdhouse In Your Soul'.

Flaws:

Bonfire Night does not commemorate the burning of Guy Fawkes, just his plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Fawkes did not die until the January following the plot, when he was condemned to be hanged (but in fact jumped from the gallows and fatally broke his neck). Dave also doubted his assertion that They Might Be Giants are American, but he was correct on this one - they grew up and were formed in Massachusetts.

Livin' Joy - Dreamer

Today's Transcript:

They Might Be Giants are from Canada, the same place as Avril Lavigne. Avril is the French word for April. The month neighbours of April are March and May. May, first name Brian, is married to former 'Eastenders' actress Anita Dobson. Anita Dobson used to play Angie Watts, who was married to Den Watts, played by Leslie Grantham. Grantham is the town that gave the world Margaret Thatcher. Margaret Thatcher is the mother of Carol, who this year won 'I'm A Celebrity'. 'I'm A Celebrity' is hosted by Ant and Dec, who support Newcastle United. Newcastle United yesterday fired manager Graham Souness. Graham Souness managed Galatasaray for a year or so around 1995, which is also the year that Livin' Joy re-released their classic 'Dreamer', which links to Livin' Joy and 'Dreamer'.

Flaws:

Dave cast doubt on whether Anita Dobson and Brian May are actually married, but they are, so all fine there. However, after actually getting it right yesterday, today he got They Might Be Giants' nationality wrong - they are American. Also, Carol Thatcher won 'I'm A Celebrity' last year, not this year.

Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like A Lady)

Today's Transcript:

A dreamer is what you'd be if you were asleep. Asleep is the opposite of awake. A wake is what you have in Ireland when somebody dies. Dies is the plural of dice, which are what you throw when you're gambling. Gambling is a popular activity in Las Vegas, which was the setting for 'Ocean's Eleven'. Eleven is a prime number, and in that respect shares something in common with five. 5ive were the band who had a hit with 'Keep On Movin'', which was also the name of a hit for Soul II Soul. Soul II Soul were fronted by Jazzy B, who shares the same surname as former Radio 1 DJ Emma B, although there's also another Emma B who goes out with Brian Harvey. Harvey is a name associated with Bristol Cream. 'Cream' was a hit for Prince & The Nu Power Generation. 'My Generation' was a hit for The Who. If you were to ask me "who" today's link is by I'd say Aerosmith, which links to Aerosmith and 'Dude (Looks Like a Lady)'.

Flaws:

Dice is a plural, die is the singular, so Dave had it the wrong way round.

D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better

Today's Transcript:

Aerosmith are fronted by Steven Tyler, with Joe Perry on guitar. The guitar is popular in Spain, which has Madrid as its capital. Madrid is where David and Victoria Beckham live. Victoria Beckham used to be in the Spice Girls, whose debut hit was in 1996. 1996 was the year that Oasis played a massive gig at Knebworth. Knebworth is like the stately home of rock. 'Rock Me Amadeus' was a no1 for Falco, who was from Austria. Austria's capital is Vienna, which was also the title of a hit by Ultravox. Ultravox's frontman Midge Ure has done a lot of work for charity and has probably met Tony Blair at some point. When Tony Blair was elected Prime Minister in 1997 he used D:Ream as his campaign song, which links to D:Ream and 'Things Can Only Get Better'.

Flaws:

Seamless link.

Robbie Williams - South Of The Border

Today's Transcript:

D:Ream were fronted by Peter Cunnah, who shares the same first name as Peter Schmeichel, who used to be a goalkeeper. Goalkeepers wear gloves on their hands. The hands are the part of the body that you use to wave. A wave of a different type is what you might enjoy if you were a surfer. Surfers tend to drive camper vans, a bit like Joe Mangel off of 'Neighbours'. 'Neighbours' is a word referring to the people who live in your street. 'Streetcar Named Desire' was a book written by Tennessee Williams. Tennessee is also the name of an American state, which is home to Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. If you add an extra 'S' to 'Presley' you get 'Pressley', as in Steven Pressley, who's from Scotland. If Steven Pressley were to move to an English club it would involve him moving 'south of the border', which links to Robbie Williams and 'South Of The Border'.

Flaws:

Seamless link.

Sleeper - Sale Of The Century

Today's Transcript:

South of the border is how you would describe America if you were canadian. Canadians often speak French. French, first name Dawn, is one half of French & Saunders. Jennifer Saunders is married to Adrian Edmonson, who collaborated with the rest of the cast of 'The Young Ones' on the song 'The Young Ones' with Cliff Richard. Cliff Richard likes tennis. Tennis is the sport that you'd associate with John McEnroe. John McEnroe was married to Tatum O'Neal, who starred in 'International Velvet' with Nanette Newman, who is the mum of Emma Forbes who used to be on TV with Andi Peters, who is crap at ice-skating. Ice-skating is now a sport in the Winter Olympics, which takes place in a couple of days in Italy. Italy was the setting for 'The Merchant of Venice', which is by William Shakespeare. Writing books is what Louise Wener now does, which links to Sleeper and 'Sale Of The Century'.

Flaws:

The Young Ones didn't sing 'The Young Ones' with Cliff Richard, it was 'Living Doll'. Texters also pointed out that technically Shakespeare wrote plays, not books.

Tedious Facts:

MARRS - Pump Up The Volume

Today's Transcript:

A sleeper is something that you'd find on a railway line. Railway lines should never be somewhere that you play. 'Play' was an album by Moby, who is from New York, as is 50 Cent. 50 cents is half a dollar. Dollar were a band formed by David Van Day, who now sells kebabs or something in Brighton. Brighton is famous for producing The Ordinary Boys. The Ordinary Boys are led by Preston, who was in the 'Big Brother' house with Michael Barrymore. Michael Barrymore shares the same surname as Drew Barrymore, who was in 'Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle'. Throttle is what you might be doing to someone if you had your hands around their neck. The neck supports your head, even with the additional weight of a helmet, if you're an astronaut. If you were an astronauts your job would be to go to other planets like Mars, which links to MARRS and 'Pump Up The Volume'.

Flaws:

Seamless link.
