Checking the internet was the first thing I did, believe me. I even posted on anythingbutipod.com, and the geeks there were really helpful and showed me the combination of button-pressing that gets me into "test mode". However, it turned out sending it to be fixed was the only way.
I've tried so hard to get around phoning Sony... I've always had sort of a phobia of phoning people (I work in an office, so I'm dealing with it

), but am left with no other option so I'll phone them up at lunchtime. I'll basically tell them everything I wrote in that above post, albeit more politely.
They'd better listen and give it another go. I'm not sure I'd be able to convince them to replace it either. They even had the audacity to inform me that it was scatched on all sides in the invoice!
