there is loads of satire and jokes made about terrorists and such on tv and in films, why is it wrong for me to dress up as one?

I *personally* think that, by dressing up as something horrible and wrong that you don't agree with AT ALL, you're making a protest against it. That is an arab sheik fancy dress costume. Not a "terrorist" costume.

I still think though that if you add "bombs" to it to make it into as you say "a terrorist" outfit, you'll be asking for a lot of unnecessary trouble. You manage to offend at least 2 people here by just suggesting it. Imagine what other's at the party might say, once fueled with a little alcohol.

Although if you're going with like-minded people then I imagine, they'd all laugh, joke about "arab bombers" and then start chanting "no surrender to the IRA" at the top of their voices.......... or something else moronic along those lines.
