The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Can only be good news I suppose.. I mean how many more times an hour can they play that god awful Rich Girl song.

BBC Radio 1 has announced the introduction of changes to the station's playlist, the method by which tracks are selected for play during daytime shows.

From Thursday 14 April a fourth list will be created, the 1 Upfront list.

The 1 Upfront list will exist alongside the current A, B and C lists and will allow Radio 1 to further increase its commitment to new music.

The 1 Upfront list will consist of five tracks each week, averaging two to four plays per track, and will give Radio 1 the ability to support yet more emerging artists and brand new talent at an earlier stage.

In addition to the new list there will be small changes to the A, B and C lists. On the A list the number of rotations each track gets will slightly decrease whilst rotations on the B and C list will see a slight level of increase.

Alex Jones-Donelly, Head of Music and Live Events, said: "The promotion of new music is at the heart of all the decisions we make which is why we've brought in these changes to the playlist.

"It's really exciting to give more artists the opportunity of exposure on daytime Radio 1 and that's what the 1 Upfront list will allow us to do."

I don't understand how Radio1 can be so big and yet continually get the playlist so massively wrong :?

Surely, surely they realise that all we want is a bit of variation. You only have to look at the success of the Brits25 thing and the ten hour takeover to see that hearing some generic dance tune over and over again is not the way to win listeners!

Sorry but you are wrong. The ten over takeover, the single most popular song requested was Usher - Yeah, which was on very high rotation at the time. The number of times tracks get played a week on R1 is the result of research into the ideal amount. You may see it as a sad fact but the puplic on the whole likes high rotation. This isn't a public pleasing move, it's more of an Industry/Media/Government pleasing one.

Why are radio1's listeners so low compared to radio 2 etc then?

Also, where is this research coming from? How many people, from where? I've learned the hard way not to trust statistics :P Anyway I don't like the playlist and so if I want to complain then I will!

Radio 2 serves middle Britain. Middle Britian will always bring the biggest audience. For other examples see: The Labour Party, Keane, Dido and ITV.

Any station that doesn't research it's playlist policy, the main deciding factor in what audience they'll get let's not forget, would be idiotic. The playlist has to provide a bit for everyone in Radio 1's age range. If you're too picky to let the stuff you don't like pass then that's too bad for you.

I hate the phrase "middle britain". I blame Eminem and all his "middle american" crap.

you seem to be confusing it with whats popular.

I think they should add in older songs more (been said) but cut down on the crappy r nd b junk that gets played so often

It's a nice idea in principle, although listening over the last few days I've noticed no discernible difference. Studio B, Bodyrockers & Mario still abound - and I haven't heard a single play of Audio Bullys, Maxïmo Park or Mint Royale.

Anyone else thing the '1-Upfront' list is just a list of records they weren't sure to put on the main playlist?

It's going to be easy to miss them if they are only getting two to four plays per week.

Yeah it doesn't specify that these plays will be in peak listening time shows (like Moyles), if they specified that there would be more chance of it being heard.

They're most likely on Jo Whiley's show.

I read it but there appears to be more r nd b than anything else atm, especially on Moyles. If something I don't like comes on then I channel swap but its non stop Mario, Usher, Nelly

Commercial R'n'B is awful, especially the female stuff, which is always the same "strong woman, I've been cheated on, men are pigs" sh*te.
