I used to work for a small company based in Hungerford, but my boss was well acquainted with people in larger companies (as he had worked with them in previous roles). Basically he used to be the engineer at several radio stations, back in the day when they needed them! A lot of presenters go off to set up production companies and then they came to him once he set up his engineering company.
In this particular case the company was called "Something Else" and they landed the contract to basically take a live feed, and both forward it on to some foreign stations, as well as provide equipment for other broadcasters. The other task was to record output, and then master it quickly onto CD to be "run" to one of Capital, Radio One or Radio Two. My role was to edit down the live tracks so that they could be broadcast on air on those stations
I got the job through meeting this guy at a radio station so was quite lucky. Other notable cool stuff was that Wise Buddah were one of our clients so met a few peeps there. As a clubber my ultimate highlight was going round to Pete Tong's house (on my own) to fix a problem he was having with an ISDN unit. That was seriously cool!
If you want a job like that basically hunt down a production company and start at the bottom. A lot of the jobs they take on are pretty crap to be honest, sound to picture stuff etc but you get the odd gem. My day to day job was hardly glamourous and was mostly office based but it was worth it just for the highlights!
I've gone on far too long now and bored a few people no doubt
