With news that everyone will soon be able to ride Jo Whiley, Cornwall International Airport have announced they are to rename the Departure Lounge to Jo Whiley Departure Lounge.

The online poll on the County Council website showed that 85% of respondents would have liked the airport re-named, but the County Council decided against the idea. However, we did decide to name the new departure lounge after Jo Whiley. Jo will be coming down to Cornwall to do her show in the summer and unveil a plaque to mark the occasion.

Good decision. Although a mildly hilarious radio feature, to actually rename an airport after a still alive and, with all due respect, fairly low impact celebrity that is probably unknown outside of R1 listenership would have been a silly move. You could have seen them saying "Why the hell did we do that" in 5 years time if they had gone ahead with the renaming.

Still, nice to see the power R1 has.

For someone who has not listened to any of this at all - why Cornwall? Was it just a random airport they picked or were they the only ones to take up the idea? I would have thought Luton would be more appropriate, with it being nearer to Whiley.

Jo Whiley went to Newquay for R1's Summer Friday Thing last year. They also tried Blackpool, which has a few links with Radio 1
