The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

There's a discussion on this on another site/forum and I want to defend Chris, but I want to hear the interview first. I went to the Radio 1 website but couldn't find where to download it. Can someone please show me where.

Thanks for the link :)

Well I think it’s clear enough that no racism was intended and none taken by Halle. It was all good humoured. Just shows how things can be blown out of all proportion. However, what I don’t understand, is the contrast between the actual interview and the comments made afterwards, mostly by Chris. I can only think there was some kind of happening off-air, as they left the studio. The interview was pleasant enough. Yes, she didn’t say a lot, but that’s because she didn’t get as much opportunity. She was charming throughout, no attitude. Chris did hog the mic too much, yes. So it’s weird how he laid into her, after she’d left. And they all gave her a low score. :?

I didn't get that either. She must have had a bit of an attitude.

Sorry, but that sounds racist to me!! Maybe it's the way you're putting it...

kim wrote:the history of the Black race has been fraught with inequality and injustice

Again, this sounds to me like a racist comment, but maybe it's the way you put it...

kim wrote:The references to a "big, fat, black guy" making someone “put (their) hands in the air” is racist.

So if you're in a bar with some friends and there's a big fat black dude with your group, he's sat in amongst a load of skinny white dudes, it's your round and you're at the bar.. you have no clue of his name or what he drinks, and you call, "hey! dude! What are you drinking?" And a skinny white guy responds, is it racist to say, "Not you, I was talking to the big black dude!"?

Perhaps "Big fat Black Guy" was the only way Chris could think to describe the male in question. Maybe if he was being overly politically correct he should have said, "African-american male, in rotund, bordering on obese, physical appearance". But let's be honest, that is not just a mouthful, that's not Mr. Moyles.

kim wrote:Even if Chris denied the intent of the statement as being racist, he should re-evaluate his perception of black people.

Have you spoken to every black person in the country? How many fat, black males would take offence to being described as fat and black?
I'm fat and white, I have no objection to being called a fat white guy. I'm also 6ft5 and I have no objection to being called tall. Maybe Chris could have put it better, but I'm pretty sure you know what I'm saying. If someone's short, black, chinese, fat, thin, italian, whatever, using their physical attributes as adjectives is not racist or discriminatory. A duck is a duck.

kim wrote:Would he characterize Americans of other ethnicities (Asian, Latino, or Caucasian) as robbers? Is that the extent of his exposure to black people? Big (ominous), fat (connotations of laziness), and black (gangsters, whores, criminals, etc.) are all false generalizations that have been imposed on African-Americans for centuries.

Now you're just being pedantic!

kim wrote:If one perpetuates those stereotypes, even in just, s/he negates all of the progress people of African decent have contributed to the world.

Again, we're back to the description thing again. Chris was by no means "negating all of the progress people of african descent have contributed to the world." In truth, I think you need to take a chill pill.

kim wrote:Chris has been given the gift of spreading his message to the world.

And doesn't he do well?

Otherwise I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be talking about him.

Rant over, thanks for your input.

Can I just say one more thing?
I am very surprised how this topic made me think. I’m Polish and I’m 22. I live in Scotland now (like 2 years) and I must say that things in here (when it comes to races and differences between people) are totally different than in my country. Till some time ago I did not realise how difficult the problem of racism is. I know about racism as my country had a painful history with extermination of Jews … but I did not realise that such a discussion can be sparkled with a harmless comment.
Couple of weeks ago Chris was talking about page 3 girl. Apparently she was Polish or Czech and he said something like: “contact me and I’ll sort out a working visa for you” When Dave explained that Poland is in EU and they don’t need visa he said: “She can still come and I’ll check her English”
I must admit that at the beginning I felt quite offended but I don’t know I kinda let it go and never thought about it again till now. (sorry I know that I’m not making any point)
In my opinion the whole comment wasn’t really harmful and I guess the whole issue has been exaggerated. But fair enough. I’m glad that all of you found some time to post your points of view
and also made me realise how careful you have to be to not offend anyone.
Thank You

I applaude Halle Berry for her response to the ignorant and insensitive comment made by shock-jock Moyles. She showed incredible restraint...what a class act... Here in the US, we have a so called celeb...Howard Stern...what is supposed to be humor more often comes off as racist, chauvinistic garbage...as Mr. Moyles failed miserably in attempting to emulate a "Black" person...I wonder... how many people of color does he have as friends...not many I imagine, if any at all...I would hope that the radio station along with Mr. Moyles offer an apology to their listners, as well as Ms. Berry

Jesus listen to yourself. I don't think Moyles is really a 'shock-jock' any more anyway... Maybe in the beginning he was, but you can't really be on breakfast.

The comment has been explained, the whole thing was blown out of proportion. Moyles seems to get along with people like Spoony and Trevor Nelson (is he still on?) pretty well - I'm sure there are other black people who also get on with him; at least one black person on here has indicated he was not offended by the comment.

He certainly didn't say the comment with the intention to shock, you could tell by the casual way he was speaking. I think Halle just needs to lighten up a bit.

i doubt that will happen. some people view the world through a certain lense, and halle berry's lense seems to be more sensitive to racism than other. is it hyper-sensitive? maybe. she's not calling for him to be sacked, so i guess it's allright. maybe she does need to lighten up, but that's too easy for somebody to say.

...perhaps there are those who view this incident as being blown out of porportion... I do realize that sometimes the media will exaggerate an event to grab your attention, therefore making it more "newsworthy", however after reading what was offered regarding this incident, as an African American, I am offended. Not only am I offended by the ignorance of Mr. Moyles behavior, I especially take offense to the sense of entitlement that allows others to assume they can dictate what should or should not be offensive to myself or any individual...I fully understand that Mr.Moyles and and the station had to try and explain away what happened...it's not ok, but that's what they do to save face...but to futher disrespect Ms. Berry by negating her right to be offended is inexcusable...I do not assume to speak for all African Americans nor do I believe that Mr. Moyles behavior represents the view of all members of his nationality or ethnic background, however, speaking for myself, this African American finds the actions of Mr. Moyles and his employer truly disrepectful, insensitive and offensive.

nayarms, in a PM to me wrote:...you need to listen to yourself...how dare you assume the responsibility of telling me what I should or should not take offense to...I don't give you that authority over me...and let me tell you one more thing...to casually dismiss inappropriate and disrespectful behavior no matter how innocent is inexcusable

not unless they are all dressed the same, why can't he be described by what he's wearing...the same way you would make the differece between the "skinny white dudes"

Too right. I remember when it was OK to say half-cast. Then it was mixed-race. Then it was a "person born from parents of different ethnic origin to one another".

I'm a bouncer, and every incident that occurs in a club, for example if we have to approach somebody because they're being too loud, or if we have to eject somebody, has to be written down. A collegue of mine lost his SIA license because he wrote, and I quote almost to the letter, "Evicted a black male, 5ft10, shaven head wearing blue jeans, white trainers and a white shirt as he was extremely intoxicated and his language and behaviour whilst on the dancefloor was causing offence."

He lost his license for writing "Black Male". Apparantly we have to "Endeavor to discover a person's ethnic origin" before writing anything down- ie, african american, white european, indonesian asian descent.

This, my friends, really is madness. What I can't figure out is what's next???
