Very big oh no for Geoffrey Hughes, read about him on holiday. Such a shame.

Three 'oh no's yesterday for the composer Marvin Hamlisch, who wrote the scores for many famous films and musicals, Mark O'Donnell, who also wrote some great musicals including Cry Baby, and Anna Piaggi, the amazing Italian fashion writer and style icon. RIP.

Marvin Hamlisch was not only a great composer but a lovely, funny, enthusiastic, encouraging and generous man. Gone at the age of only 68 - far, far too soon. Oh no.

An oh no for the death of Helen Gurley Brown, author of Sex & The Single Girl. A revolutionary book in the 60s - she was a real pioneer of the time. RIP.

Scott McKenzie has died according to reports. He wrote and sang one of my all time favourite songs San Francisco which inspired the hippy movement of the late 60s. Legendary.Steve Wright will be gutted. He never stops playing it on his big show!

Been on holiday - this I missed. I look back on what she wrote in her book Having It All and cringe now, but that woman was SO influential in so many ways - Oh No.

Nic, do you happen to know if she was still married to David Brown, or had that gone the way of many things? I would be sad if it had.

The Hollywood director Tony Scott has committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. He directed movies like The Hunger, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II, The Last Boy Scout, True Romance, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Spy Game, Man on Fire, Déjà Vu, The Taking of Pelham 123 and Unstoppable and was the brother of the director Ridley Scott. Very shocking news 8O http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-19314967

She was, but he died in 2010. He was 93!

Very sad about Tony Scott too. True Romance is such a great film. RIP.

Sad about Tony Scott. Top Gun is the most homoerotic film of all time and therefore fantastic.

He can't have been - David Brown was famously younger than Helen Gurley when they got married, she mentioned it in a lot of her writing. Unless she lied about his age!

Maybe wiki is wrong. Or maybe he did lie.

Could be either - wiki has her down as born 1922 which seems right, and him as born 1916 but I definitely remember her mentioning that he was younger than her. Ah well.

Another oh no for American comedian and actress Phyllis Diller - known most recently as the voice of Peter's mom in Family Guy, but a veteran of tons of tv shows, and a female stand-up comic in 1955! Like HGB, a pioneer. RIP.

Wow - the "big" women are dropping like flies. I suppose, given the era when women first emerged from "the kitchen" and were able to become influential in general terms, its not surprising - time passes and they were young a long time ago.

Phyllis Diller - Oh No.

I never watched the muppets show. But A muppets Christmas carol is one of only two Christmas films that I like (The other one being Scrooged).
I know of the character though and it's very sad to read such news.
