GHG Euro 2012 Special - Football Songs

Postby English Bob » Sun Jul 01, 2012 11:32 am

Well, looks like I'm back hosting the Golden Hour Game again! Now, I know a lot of people don't really care much for football, but seeing as how the Euro 2012 final is today, I thought this week's game must have a football theme.

Therefore, this week it's all about football songs! The good, the bad and the downright awful (I'm looking at you, John Barnes!), all are up for nomination!

I'll leave the interpretation of the topic entirely up to you. Either football songs heard in the stadiums, songs released in the charts by footballers or even just songs which mention football!

I'm getting in there quick with the best one ever - Three Lions, the original 1996 version. The emotion it generated was immeasurable.

Ant and Dec- We're on the ball

Let's be honest, this won't win but I can't imagine any Chelsea song would have either!

I just couldn't pick Del Amitri's song for Scotland's World Cup '98 campaign, instead I've gone for K'naan - Wavin' Flag. Better known as the official 2010 World Cup song.

I'm surprised that nobody has gone for World In Motion yet, so I'm having that. I can't find the video on youtube though.

No point, Yuds has got this one wrapped up. Unless I went for the France '98 version.

Three lions is good enough to be sung at every England match, instead we get the bloody England Band.

They are so dire aren't they? Its embarrasing enough to be an England fan at the best of times, but they just add insult to injury. I'd have thought the unexpected reaction when they were binned from the first match of the Euros would have given them a hint that NO-ONE LIKES YOU, YOU'RE AN EMBARRASSMENT AND WE ALL WISH YOU WOULD SHUT UP - but no.

It makes it a 'party atmosphere' that a majority of the crowd don't enjoy.

We're not an African nation, we're not Brazil - there's no culture of 'carnivale' or flamboyant displays of emotion in English football. Some of the European countries (aside from the foul chanting/noises) have very intimidating crowds - we don't have to be scary to drown out our opposition, but I wish we could at least channel some of the passion that's in the PL to national football.

Here's mine.

Oh, is that what it is? I can't see videos here. I remind everyone constantly to type the name of their song too...but yeah, if it's World In Motion, I chose it three posts before.

Ah damn, didn't see that. In that case, I'll go for the greatest football anthem there's ever been.

At this point I'm glad I can't see videos, cos that song was played at my cousin's funeral so it's instant floods of tears for me.

Its a great song, but Gerry and the Pacemakers * it to hell and back. Worst recording of it ever.

It's the one the Scousers use though! I've been on a real Elvis kick recently (his version is great), his voice makes me melt. Him and Tom Jones.

Here's a brand new football song, only recently released by a local lad and yet to be heard and sung around the world. Cracking lyrics. Very entertaining.Temporary video at the mo. It would be great if you guys would give it a listen and maybe share if you like it.

It's called 'That Football Song' by Wrist!
