Moyles and Mark & Lard Archive - Discussion & Request Thread

That's not gonna help recover the Moyles Shows easily. Over time I suppose I can eventually just download everything again but that will take far too long.

I was going to suggest using a cloud backup service but with that amount of data you'd have no chance.

Well if I get it all recovered I'm definitely buying another hard drive to back it all up to!

Sounds like the boot partition (or partition table) has been damaged, so it doesn't understand that the drive has anything on it. The fact it can be read is good (suggests the method of reading from the Blu ray player doesn't rely on the boot partition) as it means the data is intact but can't be seen as the system runs off the boot first.

As to how you fix it... er, if i find out then I'll get back to you.

Buy a new drive, copy the data from the knackered drive to the new drive. Use R-Studio or GetDataBack or a freeware alternative.

Once your data is recovered, make regular backups and/or use a RAID setup.

Will GetDataBack definitely do the job? I'll consider buying it if it does? Remember the files are still on the hard drive so they haven't actually been deleted as such.

I've got a program called 'PC Inspector File Recovery' and that won't see any files.

Did you visit the site? That and R-Studio have demo versions. Try them. Or get a freeware alternative. Google is your friend.

Thanks for them. Good to have some new shows to download.

But by any chance you could could save them as 128kbps instead of 320kbps once you've edited them, like the others are (ideally 44.1kHz too)?

Also, we usually use this format when posting them, so they can be copied straight to the archive list more easily:

Yesssss! Downloaded the full version of GetDataBack off pirate bay and seems to work. Got some files off perfectly. Will spend the night copying my films to my laptop then buy a new hard drive for the rest this week if I can.

It might have just been a blip, when you have all the data reformat and it should work again...

but also having a backup is not a bad idea just in case... :D

Yeah I'm definitely getting a backup now. I had my music backed up on this hard drive but now I'll get another to back the rest up. And I'm hoping a format of this drive will make it work again.

I have met you half way. You may have noticed that I have put them up here as dates now (Is putting the studio guest on too much?). The kHz is already what you recommended just through luck more than judgment. I'm not tech savvy enough to go looking for that sort of thing before hand (or at any point) I've noticed that the sound quality dropped when I reduced the Kbps so that will remain the same, I hope that does'nt cause any trouble.

Thanks. Although that last one has a syntax error (it has "url" at the end of the URL).

As for the kbps, there is usually an option in most programs where you can not only choose the kbps, but also the quality level (high/medium/low), and with high quality selected that you can usually retain a decent level of quality even at 128kbps. If there is no option, then 192kbps is usually the lowest you can go and still retain a decent quality level. The only thing I would say is that if you can get a smaller kbps that you are happy with, then it will be quicker uploading the files. And the amount of required hard drive space for the whole archive won't be quite so big (it's already over 100GB!). But it's up to you.

It's best to just do one when you half an hour spare or something, rather than trying to do some every day. There's no rush to get them done after all. And as long you've got a program and computer that can allow you to edit quickly, then as you edit more and more you'll get faster at it. I can normally edit a show in 15 minutes now, so I tend to do two shows at once just whenever I have half an hour spare.

Moyles and Mark & Lard Archive - Discussion & Request Thread

Postby bmstinton93 » Thu Apr 12, 2012 8:06 am

Right, i'm gonna order a new hard drive to Uni in the next couple of days. Then when I get back Monday I'll recover everything and upload the 4 or so shows I've already edited and those 4 2005 shows of Jamie's.

Then I can get back into the editing again. I can do a show in 20 minutes now it's just the exporting from audacity and uploading which takes time but I'm gonna be revising a lot so I can do that while revising and then take like 20 minute breaks to edit a show down. I'm gonna try and pick up the pace a bit with these shows if I can.

Is it free? And why is it better than audacity?

No it's not free. But I just find it quicker and easier to use. Having said that, I was using Audacity on my dad's computer and everything was really slow-going, but that was probably because of his computer rather than Audacity itself. Especially if you're editing them in 20 minutes.

I wouldn't bother if you're editing a show in 20 minutes. It took me literally an hour to edit one show on my dad's computer using Audacity, but I'm sure that was because of his computer (and probably his sound card).
