Matt Fincham goodbye cake

Postby chrisjames » Wed Mar 28, 2012 4:55 pm

I'm thinking of maybe baking a cake in the shape of Matt Finchams face as a goodbye present and to thank him for all the work he's done for the show. Do you think they'd let me leave it at the radio One offices?

Not a bad plan at all...although Matt and I have already discussed whether of not Grimmy is partial to the odd custardy treat.

You know what? I'm going to miss Matt. At least he'll still be on Twitter.

Comparing the current show to that of a few years ago, the show sounds very messy and busy on air. I'm shocked so few others have mentioned it. It used to be Chris and Dave as the focus points, and everyone else chipped in a little. It now seems like if anyone has anything to say at any moment, say it regardless of whether it's going anywhere or of any interest.

I get the impression Chris and Dave would write tonnes of stuff in the olden days. Now it seems that no longer happens and it's down to the grunts to write things. Where are the sketches recently, like Camp Cops or even Paul Turner adverts and other glory-days features? The funniest part of the show now for me is the interaction with Roy!

I'd be amazed if anywhere near the majority of the CMS audience would pick the current line up as their all time greatest team. And maybe it's because I'm outside of the target audience now being all of 26 years old, but I don't need an Aled laughter track through the show to tell me what I should be finding funny.

I was always impressed with Matt, with his technical music knowledge and skills being way in advance of the rest of the show members and his general switched-on-ness. He had lots to offer and should have been used more on air. I always loved when he played the piano/keyboard on the show... a shame he's going. Best of luck!

For me the breakfast show was at it's best with Rachel as show producer (keeping it on track) and Aled as day producer (making an appearance at about 9ish). Sometimes a little control from a firm producer is needed to stop it sounding like a complete mess.

I agree with you that the show needs Chris (and Dave) to be the fulcrum. It's still a very good show and my default breakfast choice but it's not what it was (to me anyway) and the team make-up is part of the reason.
Welcome back my naughty donkeys!

Excellent post, was thinking much the same earlier in the week. Unfortunately, it seems they all have a lot of work to do, so are forced into sharing the duties around. I guess it isn't 2003 anymore when Chris and Dave had nothing else to do apart from the radio show - nowadays they're always talking about being busy after the show finishes, Dave especially. The show should revolve around Chris and Dave as the main contributors, both vocally and in terms of pre-prepared content, anything else is just an weaker effort as far as I'm concerned, which isn't meant as a slur, I know everyone else on the team works hard, and have to contribute ideas and material as part of their job, and do their best. But Chris and Dave are the funniest people on the show, that's why they've lasted so long together. I know Dave still writes stuff for Roy regularly, but with Chris I get the impression that he just rocks up at 6.33, is perfectly happy to just speak off the cuff for 3 hours, hangs around for 10 minutes in the post-production meeting, give a thumbs up or down to ideas, suggestions, guests etc. then * off. The situation with the parodies is particularly unusual.

Maybe it's just pre-holiday blues, they will have done almost 4 months without a break, that's pretty good going. But I would like to hear more of Chris and Dave's work on the show when they come back. That's where the soul of the show is, and always has been.

For me the show is what it is because Chris "rocks up at 6.33". The unplanned nature of the show makes it unpredictable and interesting for the listener.

The combination of Rachels punchy on air nature with Chris and Carries great personality is probably one of the best combo's in recent times. Carrie at Wimbledon must be an all time show highlight and all the banter playing up to Carries 'posh' past was always entertaining

Looks like a big congrats is in order for Carrie, don't know whether it was announced before but great to hear anyway
Carries Twitter: Thank you for the lovely messages, team Prideaux part deux due in September!

Yeah, I get that, and agree for the most part. But it's like what the earlier comment said, a lot of what the show was was it's scripted material, specially written jingles, sketches, parodies etc. It just feels like a bit of that has gone, and I'm not sure why. Don't get me wrong, the show is still the best on the radio, by far, and I like everyone who appears on the show. But it just feels as though somethings missing. Not a massive deal, the show hasn't suddenly turned to total junk, I still tune in every day and it still entertains me. Like I said before, maybe it's a natural lull before the end of this term.

Leaving card

Postby The Deadly » Tue Apr 03, 2012 3:00 pm

I am going to hang around outside Radio 1 tomorrow in the hope of seeing someone from the show and I was wondering if you thought it would be a good idea to drop a card into reception for Matt Fincham on behalf of everyone here? Or is it a bit too much?
