Do you think Tedious Link is dying a death?

Postby Nicola_Red » Sat Mar 17, 2012 3:39 pm

Now as you all know, I transcribe the Tedious so I naturally pay attention to when they do it or don't do it. So far this year, in ten weeks of shows - that's 40 potential Tedious Links - they've only done it 20 times. The mathematically minded amongst you will notice that this means they're now only bothering to do Tedious Link half the time.

So...do you think the feature has had its day? This is the part of the show that former Big Boss Andy Parfitt famously described as "appointment listening", but is Chris fed up of it? It gets relegated for any guest, other feature, corporate plug or sometimes it just seems that they can't be bothered with it. Do you miss it, or do you think it's time to let it die?

(Note, I still have half of 2006 and all of 2007 and 2008's links to transcribe, so even if the feature did die now, it'd keep me busy for quite a while yet!)

Yeah i think you're right, Nic.
And its usually the only time in the show when the music is half decent too.
If they replaced it with another new regular enjoyable feature it wouldn't be so bad ,but as you say its usually because of some tedious guest over-run or rubbish in-house plug.

I've noticed this too, and on quite a few occasions there didn't seem to be any reason at all of dropping it (no interview, corporate plugs etc.) which makes me wonder if Chris is simply getting fed up of it and choosing not to do it. It does annoy me, because I do agree that it's often one of the only halfway decent songs played during the show these days. For me, the R1 playlist is now so poor that most of the shows could use the old Mark and Lard tagline about there being four great songs per show guaranteed, although sometimes even promising that amount would be pushing it!

My guess is that it's only dropped when they run over and have a lack of time to do it. If I had my way there would be no music on the show at all.

I hope they're not thinking of dropping it, it's usually the one song on the show I have a chance of liking

That would be easy for some people on here to edit the show then, but harder for other people to edit a clip from the show. :)
I still think that they should play music. Admittadley not a huge amount is all that but every now and then a great/listenable song does crop up and as I still only listen to radio 1, I would miss that good song.

I presumed they had actually dropped the feature because I hadn't heard it recently (though I don't hear the full show every day). It is a shame but it has been running for a long time, perhaps it is the only original feature from the start of breakfast?

It's the only original to keep going since the start of the breakfast show. CPC was there at the start aswell but it got a year or two break after two years.
I do feel it's time thay rested cpc now though. The feature is becoming dull because of the repeat contestants. It was better with a new couple every day. That Essex lad at the end of last year proves my point. The first time he was on, he was amousing. The second, not so much and then after that it was just boring to listen to him.

Tedious should be rested aswell. Not completley though. Twice, maybe three times a week it should be on and have a completley new feature in it's place on it's rested days. They don't have as many listeners on as they used to. It would be fun to have random listeners on again on a more regular basis.

Noo it has a nice funky tune, I like that better than the songs cos Dave's musical tastes are limited, frankly, and I aint no expert either.

Wouldn't mind if it went but its just another reminder of the relaxed attitude Chris takes to his show and all its old features, if it aint broke don't fix (or play) it.

Well, it's only meant to be on four days at the moment, and they're barely managing two, so that's pretty much the rate they're actually doing it at.

SAV1OUR wrote: if it aint broke don't fix (or play) it.

Do you mean the show is 'broken' if they include Tedious, ie it's better without it? Or that it's 'broken' if they don't do it?

Well there'd be a gap to fill without it, and what with old features returning and even older ones remaining, I can't see the point in getting rid of it, its ok, its a change from the news.

Similarly, with someone saying CPC should go - what's the point if you can't come up with something better? All that would happen is what's happened with tedious, they would just talk, and I don't think that's right, bit lazy.

Keep tedious, they can't be arsed to change it up now.

Something else needs pointing out too - let's get ready to ramble died a death, they got rid, and now I'm left wondering if it shouldve just been rested? They need that structure back.

What's happened is that poor old tedious has been flying solo without ramble and has been struggling.

Saying that though I don't know whether it would be worth bringing it back now, be good to have it back for a bit though.

It's just an excuse to play a non-playlisted record on the show every day. They're few and far between on daytime Radio One :(

I think it's more that they can drop it, not they want to.
They have to do the news.
Ramble in reality is 6.30 - 7.00 now.
I wish they would drop the 9.15 whats coming up on Radio One today, it always seemed show horned, and would be better presented in a properly made trailer rather than Chris just randomly shouting at Aled when there's a pause in the talk, I often think, poor Aled he didn't see that one

ALED

Oh, um.....Coming up today, at 10 the vacuos no mark Fern Cotton....

That's why I actually enjoy the way CPC was back in 2004 etc when they had a new pair of contestants every day because they seem to have a pair on for at least a week nowadays and it gets dull after a couple of days and I got annoyed when those two guys were on last year for 3 weeks because by the end of the first week, they had nothing interesting to say.

I don't really mind if Tedious stays or goes because I don't really listen to that part live and just listen to the edited version put up on the forums. I do like the way it was as well with the whole Ramble part afterwards and the little arguments Dave & Chris etc have when Dave supposedly got something wrong during the tedious.

But it does seem that they are not doing it as much because I listened to a show or two last week and didn't have it at all for no reason since there was no guest or promotional link etc.

I want Buzz off back as well since I like that feature since Classical Class is nice for a while but gets dull since it is the same.
"And all that there!"

I love Tedious, I think it's a great feature - but how many people thought it'd be running this long when it started all those years ago in the afternoons? I don't even think Chris and Dave would have expected that. Having said that, they just seem to drop it when they're out of time, so hopefully it'll be going strong for a while yet.

The flaws in tedious are never mentioned any more, which takes away quite a lot of the value of the feature for me.

Same here. I still always go through the link for flaws and mention them in my transcript, but they very rarely mention them on the show anymore. In the past I've spotted four or five mistakes and not one of them has been pointed out on-air.
