Fair dos. We're blessed with a bunch of excellent and independent music shops in Colchester so it would never even occur to me to look online for something like that. Which is interesting because I shop online for pretty much everything else!

We only have 1, and it's slightly expensive. It was only £4 online too.

Online shopping, for anything, is great. And often cheaper, not only to buy the item but especially to get it to yourself - often cheaper and better for the environment to get things sent to you*, assuming you can wait the few days for it to arrive.

* I know thats not a golden rule, but in general its true.

I love online shopping, but now that I don't live at home or have a car - if I'm not in when it's delivered then it's a massive hassle to get it!

True, but if we bought online all the time and the High Street shops went out of business, where would that leave us? The High Street would effectively become the High Street - including prices, with no competition to beat.

I would love to do that - unfortunately things have been known to go wandering from our warehouse.

Assuming the high street sellers have the noggin to advertise their stock online, where is the issue? If not, its their own fault they go out of business.

Online shopping doesn't have to be from a major chain, many small retail outlets also sell online these days. I'd much rather support local shops, even if they aren't 'local' to me.

I'm not a believer in an economy led solely by market forces - Thatcher demonstrated beautifully how bad an idea that is - BUT it is fair to say that things change. If the way we do our shopping is one of those things, hanging on to an outdated idea of "the High Street" for sentimental or traditionalist reasons makes no sense whatsoever. If it did we'd all still be living in caves.

Sorry Toph but this is absolute bollocks.
Apart from the typo that the HS would become the HS, it's also not true if it were typed correctly.

Your argument relies on the premise that all internet sellers would fix the price, and ignores that Supermarkets now account for allot of non food sales, and the internet, as home shopping is not new, I think Littlewoods have been making a fortune out of it for over 100 years.

How about those who actually like to go out and shop? I don't go too often mainly because I can't afford it but I much rather save my money up and then go into town and look for something nice than just browse and click and done. Plus you get the added bonuses of going out and getting some fresh air and often bumping into people you know (and like, otherwise it wouldn't be a plus).

Much as the internet is great for shopping, I never want to buy clothes online just because I'm a bit of an odd shape, inbetween sizes and usually need to see exactly what an item's look/feel/stretchiness/transparenency is otherwise I buy something, it arrives and I hate it because it'll just look wrong on me.

Indeed and that is why the high street will not die, it may change, but it will not die. Rents may go down and then other things which might be more interesting may appear, who knows. Buy stuff where you want when you want, that the choice we have, and the choice retailers have in making money by working out that.

The gf is down until Wednesday doing a mini-pupilage just across the road from where I work, so we travelled in together this morning - was really nice having her on my morning commute (even though we just sat next to each other for 50 minutes with occasional chatter and naps). Went into work happy - which for a Monday morning is unheard of!

Its been going on for about 6 months. I was put into a hugely senior role, but due to HR red tape they couldn't put through the pay rise. It has finally gone through...and maybe it was due to the fact that certain parts of my role are specialist expertise...and only I can do it

Have they given you a bonus to make up for the 6 months you should have had? (even if they haven't, that's fantastic!)
