He's coming across as a pretty cool guy. I got a little bit excited when he said "shit" live on air... and the way he just said a little "sorry" and shrugged it off.

It's reasonably interesting to me, but how is this meant to appeal to the target audience? It doesnt particularly bother me as I am outside of that audience, but I can't imagine many kids enjoying this.

That did occur to me Travis Bickle, but I don't give a crap because I think John Cleese is brilliant and I've never heard an interview where he hasn't been fascinating - and this is no exception. I will have to go back later and listen to the whole thing; I loved them talking about comedians that he loves. I agree with him about Peter Cook as well.

That's the same thing I said when Tom Jones on - how come they can't play anything from before 1990 on the Golden Hour, but they can have a guest on whose stories are all about stuff they did in the 60s and 70s? But yeah, regardless, he's a comedy legend and I too wanna re-listen to the whole thing at some point.

He is still voicing works 'the kids' would know - there was a text saying they only knew him from Shrek for example.

I'd have thought most target audience would know of him, and this can be a padding out of their understanding of who he is, what he's done, what his legacy is and so on.

While trying not to sound too much like a lickarse, i was impressed at how good Chris & Dave were at interviewing him. Not the usual larking about Chris does when one of his 'mates' regularly pop in & a welcome break from the sometimes desperate flirting with any attractive female.
You got the feeling John Cleese was really surprised by it & enjoying himself immensely too.
He was on for over an hour & it didn't seem like it.
One of the best interviews Chris has done in ages.

Yeah, great interview. I was surprised to hear he was going on the show and was wondering how he'd fit in to the show's normal flow of interviews and banter but it was done really well and sounded great. A nice change from the normal kind of guests but at the same time the interview was fitting for Radio 1.

Cleese's work has recently been fairly desperate, and has seemed like he was chasing the money (no doubt to the expensive divorce) - my guess would be that his PR phoned up and offered it to Chris, and Chris wasn't going to turn down the chance to have Cleese on the show (be it related or not). I've not listened yet, but it seems that he did a great job of showing that he's still funny, and he's trending in the UK on twitter. Win/Win.

Interesting interview, always good to hear a straight talking guest on. Fair play to the team for bringing him on, always going to be slightly more risky than bringing in whoever is in the top 10!

Yes 100% agree, they have these people not considered as hip for todays yoof, but they dont do the same with the so called Golden Hour. I think Cleese is a legend love Monty Python, loved hearing about how he started and with the Footlights and with David Frost. I think it was a good education for the kids of how good British comedy was over 40 years ago. Overall Chris did a superb interview.
On the flip side as a Doctor Who fan thought I would listen to the interview on Fearne Cotton's show, cant stand the woman, but thought give it a chance. It was awful in contrast to Chris's interview, all that hype asking for very geeky questions, and asks 2 and one was about the film which Matt and Karen will have nothing to do with and will be seperate from the TV show, and that was pretty much it, awful, really awful, and as for her stupid forced laugh, sound like shes coughing up a hairball!! someone please gag this talentless woman what a waste of my time that was!!!

That's because her interviewing ability is non existent, and so the vacuous frankly embarrassing questions are the only ones she's capable of.

Her 'interview' of Morgan Freeman is something that'll cringe long in the memory and not for the bit the newspapers got worked up about.

There are plenty of people I have heard of as well, but that in itself doesn't make them interesting to me. There is no way on earth John Cleese is 'target' and Chris alluded to that a couple of times as well. Rhys obviously wasn't convinced either.

But don't confuse what I am saying. I quite enjoyed it, and I am not criticising the decision to have him on the show, but I don't see how it would have widespread appeal to the target audience. Nic makes a valid point that pre-90's stuff isnt played in the first half of the Golden Hour because it isnt 'target' but we can have an hour of someone who is predominantly known for what he did 30-plus years ago telling stories from that era.

If I had my way all this 'target' stuff would go out of the window and I would just focus on what is entertaining and what would broadly be appealing to the younger generation or people with a youthful outlook. And if the The Chris Moyles show and the exec producers were happy to to have a non-target guest on the show and make it entertaining, maybe they can have non-target music on the first half of the Golden Hour and make that entertaining too.

I am quite sure that far more of the target audience encounter 1980's music on a far more regular basis than they do John Cleese.

But the fact that it wasn't necessarily initially target material, combined with the informative and educative nature of the interview is what makes me say that turns it into something that fulfills it's Rethian target to be informative, educational and entertaining.

I think he was on/is on the One Show tonight as well, so yeah, I think he could be just doing the rounds on the various shows, but that's like any guest that comes on the show. They have to stuff they want to sell and 'advertise' but they come on for a conversation as well.
