MC Hammer, U Can't Touch This

Today's Transcript:

Sum 41 is what you get if you add 22 to 19. 19 was the average age of soldiers in the Vietnam war. Vietnam is a country in South East Asia where they like to eat a lot of noodles. 'Noodles' rhymes with 'doodles', which are what you might draw on your textbooks if you're bored in lessons. 'Lessons in Love' was a hit for Level 42, who are fronted by Mark King. Mark King shares the same surname as James king, who's the Radio 1 bloke who likes to watch movies. 'Movies' was a track by Alien Ant Farm, while The Farm had a hit with 'All Together Now'. 'Now' is an anagram of 'won', which is the opposite of lost, which is also a TV series set on a remote island. 'Islands In The Stream' was a duet by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. 'Dolly' rhymes with 'golly', which is what you might say of you'd just witnessed a miracle. A miracle is something that people pray for, and 'Pray' was a hit for MC Hammer, which links to MC Hammer and 'U Can't Touch This'.

Flaws:

Soup Dragons, I'm Free

Today's Transcript:

MC Hammer used to wear baggy trousers and was a man of the cloth. Cloth is something that needs to be spun, like the wheel in a game of roulette. Roulette is something that people play in a casino. 'Casino Royale' was the last James Bond film, and was a remake starring Daniel Craig. Daniel Craig was in 'Our Friends In The North', alongside Gina McKee. Gina McKee shares the same surname as Maria McKee, who had a hit with 'Show Me Heaven', taken from the soundtrack to the film 'Days of Thunder', which was set on an American race track. It was on an American race track that Lewis Hamilton won the Grand Prix yesterday. Yesterday was one of the days of the week that begin with the letter 'S', which is the same letter that begins the word 'soup'. If you combine 'soup' with 'dragons' you get Soup Dragons, which links to Soup Dragons and 'I'm Free'.

Flaws:

There was some discussion as to whether 'Casino Royale' was a remake. In fact the film has been made before as a spoof starring David Niven, but isn't technically regarded as a Bond film. So Dave was half right.

Girls Aloud, Biology

Today's Transcript:

"I'm free" was the catchphrase of Mr Humphries in the comedy 'Are You Being Served', which also starred Wendy Richard, who now plays Pauline Fowler in 'Eastenders'. Pauline Fowler works in a launderette, which is where you go to wash your clothes. Clothes is what you wouldn't find many people wearing on a naturist beach. Beaches can be shingle, and shingles is something you might have to go to the doctors for. Doctors wash their hands a lot so they're really clean. Clean is the opposite of dirty, which is how you might describe Christina Aguilera. Christina Aguilera is from America, as is Jessie Wallace...no...Jesse Metcalfe, who's in 'Desperate Housewives' and was going out with Nadine Coyle. Nadine Coyle is in Girls Aloud, which links to Girls Aloud and 'Biology'.

Flaws:

The character of Pauline Fowler doesn't work anywhere, as she died at the end of last year. Dave also narrowly avoided confusion between actress Jessie Wallace and actor Jesse Metcalfe.

Today's Transcript:

Biology is a school subject that normally comes under the umbrella of science. Science was in 'Big Brother' a couple of years ago, and was from Leeds, which is where Chris was last weekend. Last weekend the dates were the 16th and 17th, and if you add up the numbers 16 and 17 you get 33, which is how old Robbie Williams is. Robbie Williams is from Stoke on Trent, as is Phil 'The Power' Taylor. 'The Power' was a hit for Snap. Snap is a card game. Cards of a different type are what you give to celebrate an engagement. Rachel and Carrie are both engaged. Engaged is also a word associated with public toilets, which are where George Michael goes in the park. Today's Transcript:

'Good Thing' was taken from the album 'The Raw And The Cooked'. Raw and cooked food should be stored separately to reduce the risk of contamination and infection. 'Infected' is an album by The The. The The are one of only a few bands whose name is made up of the same repeated, with another being Wet Wet Wet. Wet Wet Wet are fronted by Marti Pellow. If you swap the 'E' in 'Pellow' for an 'I' you get 'pillow', which is something to rest your head on. Head-on is one of the worst kind of accidents you can have on the road. 'Road To Nowhere' was a hit for Talking Heads, whose lead singer is called David Byrne. David Byrne shares the same surname as Dominic Byrne, who is rubbish at tig and sometimes gets tigged by Aled. Aled is from Wales, and in that respect shares something in common with Lostprophets, which links to Lostprophets and 'Last Summer'.

Walsh. Tommy Walsh shares the same initials as Terry Wogan, who does a show on the radio. 'Radio Gaga' was a hit for
Queen. A queen traditionally had the power to behead people for treason. If you remove the first letter of 'treason'
you get 'reason', which sounds a lot like 'raisin', which is a dried grape. Grapes are crushed to make wine. Wine is

'Material Girl' was a hit for Madonna, who now has a baby from Africa. Africa is where Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman are currently riding their motorcycles, and it's also the name of the biggest hit by Toto. Toto was Dorothy's dog in 'The Wizard of Oz'. Today's Transcript:

David Bowie is from Brixton, which is an area of South London also famous for giving us former Prime Minister John Major. Major is a rank in the army, and something that Carrie's boyfriend is no doubt familiar with. Carrie's boyfriend took her to Paris at the weekend for a birthday surprise. 'Surprise, Surprise' is a TV show hosted by Cilla Black. Cilla Black is probably most famous for the show 'Blind Date'. A date of a different type is a fruit, and many fruits contain seeds or stones. Stones are also found on the roads, and if you hit one while on a motorbike it can be very dangerous. The Scissor Sisters are from New York, which is where you'd find the Statue of Liberty. Liberty were the band formed from the rejects for Hear'say, but had to change their name to Liberty X. Liberty X's Jessica Taylor is the girlfriend of England cricketer Kevin Pietersen. Kevin Pietersen says he's from here but isn't really, a bit like Greg Rusedski. Greg Rusedski used to have a really fast serve. Serve is what you do if you're a waiter in a restaurant. Restaurants are what Gordon Ramsay is good at. Gordon Ramsay shares the same surname as Madge Ramsay, who married Harold. Harold was also the name of the King that got shot in the eye with an arrow during the Norman Conquest, and he must have looked up to see the arrow flying through the air, which links to Air and 'Kelly Watch The Stars'.

Jimmy Carr shares the same first name as Jimmy Connors, who was a big favourite at Wimbledon, which is where people like to eat strwaberries. Strawberries grow in the ground so need to be picked. Stop is a word you might see written on the road at a junction, as is 'halt'. 'Halt' rhymes with 'colt', which is a type of small horse. Horses live in stables. If you remove the first letter of 'stables' you get 'tables', which are what people eat their dinner off. 'Dinner' rhymes with 'winner', as in Michael Winner, who's a film director. Film directors normally sit in those chairs that have their name on the back. Back is a word associated with bacon. Bacon, first name Richard, used to present 'Blue Peter'. Peter Buck is the guitarist in REM, who once had some mither on a transatlantic flight, and in that respect shares something in common with Courteney Cox, who had a briefr dalliance with Steve Coogan. Steve Coogan starred as Paul Calf alongside John Thomson, who we tried to get for Gag Idol last night in Sheffield. Sarah Jessica Parker shares one name in common with Scott Parker, who's moved from Newcastle United to West Ham. Ham is made from pigs, which like to roll in mud. Mud had a no1 in 1974 with 'Tiger Feet'. Feet can get athlete's foot, which is an infection that comes from a fungus. Fungus is how you'd describe something from the mushroom family. Faithless, We Come 1

Today's Transcript:

Ash is something you'd find at the bottom of a barbecue, which is something we can't do much of this summer thanks to Rihanna and her stupid song about umbrellas. 'Umbrella' is one of only a few words in the English language that begins with the letter 'U', with another being 'uncle'. An uncle is the male equivalent of an aunt. Aunt Sally was a character from 'Wurzel Gummidge'. Wurzel Gummidge was played by Jon Pertwee, who is the father of Sean Pertwee, who was in 'A Touch of Frost'. Frost, first name Jenny, used to be in Atomic Kitten and before that Precious, who once joined us on stage at a roadshow in Scarborough. Scarborough is famous for producing Joel from JK & Joel, who are this week starting a new TV show called 'Sing It Back'. 'Sing It Back' was a song by Moloko, who are fronted by Roisin Murphy, who's from County Wicklow. If you travel north from Wicklow you get to Derry, which is where I had my birthday a few years ago where some of the guests were Faithless, which links to Faithless and 'We Come 1'.

Flaws:

It's a bit of an odd statement that only a few words begin with the letter U. I think what Dave really meant was fewer than other letters of the alphabet - in my dictionary there are 16 pages devoted to the letter U, compared to say 165 for S - but that isn't the same as just "a few".

Today's Transcript:

One of the members of Faithless is Rollo, who's the brother of Dido. Dido's song 'Thankyou' was sampled by Eminem on his hit 'Stan'. Stan Collymore is a footballer and one of the stars of the series '24 Hours With', which also features Lee Ryan. Lee Ryan was in Blue with Duncan James, who's now starring in 'Chicago' in the West End. 'west End Girls' was the first single by the Pet Shop Boys, in 1985. 1985 was the year Live Aid was staged at Wembley, which also provided the setting for Live Earth. 'Earth' rhymes with 'girth', which is a measurement for cylindrical objects. 'Objects in The Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are' was a hit for Meatloaf. 'Loaf' is a word associated with bread, and the number of letters in the word 'bread' is five, which links to 5ive and 'Keep On Movin''.

Flaws:

There was some debate on the text as to whether 'West End Girls' was the Pet Shop Boys' first single; wiki confirms it was, but Dave in fact got the date wrong, as it was first released in 1984 (although wasn't a hit until 95).

Depeche Mode, Enjoy The Silence

Today's Transcript:

Five is the number of gold rings in the famous song 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'. Christmas happens every year and so is annual, like Bonfire Night. Bonfire Night is a celebration of the burning of Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. The Houses of Parliament are where you'd find the enormous clock Big Ben. Ben is the name of the bloke from Phats & Small who's now going out with Vanessa Feltz. Vanessa Feltz shares the same first name as Vanessa Paradis, who had a hit with 'Joe Le Taxi'. 'Taxi' was a TV show starring Danny DeVito, who also starred in 'Twins' with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold Schwarzenegger is from Austria, which shares a border with Switzerland, which in turn borders with France. The language of France is French, and if you wanted to translate 'fast fashion' into French you'd get 'depeche mode', which links to Depeche Mode and 'Enjoy The Silence'.

Flaws:

Much debate followed this link on the subject of Guy Fawkes. In fact Bonfire Night doesn't celebrate the death of Guy Fawkes, but the downfall of the plot to destroy the Houses of Parliament that he was charged with executing. Fawkes did not die until the January following the plot. Another problem occured with Dave's description of Big Ben as the enormous clock - in fact Big Ben is just the bell of the clock in Elizabeth Tower, although wiki does acknowledge that the name "often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower".

Atomic Kitten, Whole Again

Today's Transcript:

The video for 'Enjoy The Silence' featured Dave Gahan walking through the snow. Snow was the rapper who had a hit with 'Informer'. An informer is someone that the police might use for information. Information is what you might need if you were in a foreign city and were looking for the tourist office. 'The Office' is the TV series that made famous Stephen Merchant. 'Merchant' is a word that often comes before 'bankers', while 'bankers' rhymes with 'anchors', which stop ships drifting while in port. Port is a type of fortified wine that comes from Portugal, a bit like the parents of Nelly Furtado. Nelly Furtado's first hit was 'I'm Like A Bird'. 'Bird' is slang for a stretch in prison, and in that respect shares something in common with the word 'porridge'. Porridge is what the three bears like to eat, and another group whose name contains an animal word is Atomic Kitten, which links to Atomic Kitten and 'Whole Again'.

Today's Transcript:

Ugly Kid Joe followed 'Everything About You' with the hit 'Cat's In The Cradle'. Cradle Of Filth are a band that your mum probably wouldn't like. If you remove the first letter of the word 'like' you get 'Ike', as in David Icke, who used to play for Coventry City, and Ike Turner who was the husband of Tina. Tina Turner shares the same surname as Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys. Monkeys sometimes have red bottoms. Bottoms are what are normally shown when mooning. When Sir Patrick Moore mentions the moon he's talking about space. Spaced collaborated with Cerys Matthews of Catatonia on 'The Ballad of Tom Jones'. 'Jones' rhymes with 'bones', which are what you might find on an archaeological dig. Digging is how a crab might burrow into the sand on a beach. On a beach is the ideal place to relax if you're a seal, and Seal was the vocalist on the Adamski track 'Killer', which links to Adamski and 'Killer'.

'Killer' comes before 'whale' to describe a mammal often found in marine parks. 'Parks' rhymes with 'sharks', which also live in the sea. Ice-skating is what Torvill and Dean are very good at. Torvill and Dean won gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, which is the capital of Bosnia-Herzigovina, which is a country heavily affected by war. 'War' is an anagram of 'raw', which is how you'd describe food that isn't cooked. Cooking food is something that Gordon Ramsay is very good at. 'Alive And Kicking' shouldn't be mistaken for 'Live And Kicking', which was a Saturday morning show presented by Zoe Ball. Zoe Ball is married to Norman Cook, whose real name is Quentin. Quentin Tarantino directed 'Pulp Fiction', which starred John Travolta, who was also in 'Grease' with Olivia Newton John. Olivia Newton John is from Australia, a bit like Dannii Minogue, who's going to be on the next 'X-Factor' with Louis Walsh. Louis Walsh looks after Westlife, who had a hit with 'Flying without Wings'. Wings is a word you'd associate with seagulls, which now seem to be the size of small dogs. Small dogs are fashionable in LA, which is also somewhere that you'd probably find good Mexican food. If you worked in a Mexican restaurant you'd be an expert at rolling tacos and fajitas and might say you spent all day rolling, which links to Limp Bizkit and 'Rollin''.

Today's Transcript:

A limp biscuit might also be described as soggy. 'Soggy' rhymes with 'moggy', which is another word for a cat. Cat Deeley now lives in America, and has an annoying accent like Victoria Beckham. Victoria Beckham's new favourite words are 'fabulous' and 'major'. Major is a rank in the army, as is captain. A captain is who you'd hope was flying if you were going to Tenerife. Tenerife is where JK and Joel are off to this weekend, provided JK can find his passport. A passport should always include a photograph. 'Photograph' was a single from the Def Leppard album 'Pyromania'. If you suffer from pyromania you shouldn't be allowed to play with matches. In the olden days before lighters, matches were used by pirates on ships to light their cigarettes. A traditional pirate outfit includes an eyepatch. An eyepatch is what Gabrielle used to wear, which links to Gabrielle and 'Dreams'.

Flaws:

Some fire-based queries. Dave stated that matches were used before lighters were invented, but in fact it was the other way round - lighters were invented in the 16th century, with matches not being invented until the 18th. Aled also questioned whether it would be dangerous for pirates to have matches on ships, but Dave insisted they must have, and it's difficult to prove otherwise.

'Dreams' was yesterday's link because where the link goes, nobody knows. A nose is a lumpy bit on the front of your face that you smell stuff through. 'Through The Barricades' was a big hit for Spandau Ballet. Ballet is the topic of the film 'Billy Elliott'. Elliot was the central character in 'ET', which also starred Erika Eleniak, who was in 'Baywatch' with David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. Pamela Anderson shares the same surname as Gillian Anderson, who was in 'The X-Files' with David Duchovny, who shares the same first name as David Coleman. David Coleman used to present 'A Question of Sport' in the days when one of the team captains was Ian Botham. Ian Botham's nickname is Beefy, which is how you might describe gravy. Gravy is nice on sausages, which can be made from all sorts of meat including wild boar. Wild boars are what you might see in the jungle, and if you were visiting the jungle for the first time your host might say "welcome to the jungle", which links to Guns N' Roses and 'Welcome To The Jungle'.
