Some interesting views. I have had brief flirtations with The Archers in the past, but I don't tend to stick at it for more than a month or so every year. For news and current affairs you can't beat Radio 4. You're right about Simon Mayo, he's generally ok. I don't like Steve Wright - it's as if he hasn't moved on in the 15 years since he left Radio 1. I can't abide Ken Bruce, and god help me if you think I'm going to wake up to Venessa Feltz, she's even worse than Sarah Kennedy and that takes some doing!

I used to listen to 5 Live when Julian Worricker was doing the breakfast show, but since Nicky Campbell took over..... ***expletives deleted!!!***

Anyway.... back to my fave CD of late....

I feel the same way! I'm 45 (sadly!) and can't 'get' Radio 2 apart from Graham Norton on a Saturday. Used to like Alan Carr on there too. But the rest feels just too middle-aged although arguably I am. I don't feel like the BBC caters for my age group at all. Am not ready for Radios 3 and 4 or commercial. So what options are there!? I don't want to listen to pre-recorded stuff in the mornings even if it is Moyles. Still not really quite accepted they won't be there after September if I'm honest I struggle when they are on holiday and can't wait til they're back. I suspect it'll feel like that initially but then reality will hit...!

Maybe R1 should do the same as the Irish station 2FM. It's part of the national broadcaster RTÉ and was supposed to be targeting 15-34 year olds, but once the listening figures began to show that they were losing younger listeners a few years ago they simply announced that they had decided they would now be targeting 25-44 year olds instead and stuff the yoof (well, they said they had digital stations they could listen to). They didn't want to lose their older listeners, so by changing their target audience, problem solved! There's an idea for Big Boss Ben.

More seriously, I'm a real BBC radio whore and will listen to almost all of their main stations apart from R3 and soon R1. I like R4 for their documentaries (the two recent series of 'Don't Log Off' which just consisted of a guy sitting by a pc talking to random people around the world) was spellbinding radio for me, and I try to listen to Woman's Hour most days. I listen to Bacon's 5live show every day because I enjoy the mix of current affairs and celebrity interviews, and am also one of the many people who apparently are fans of both Moyles and Jeremy Vine. Graham Norton has been mentioned already and I would second that, as his Saturday morning show is a great listen, especially for someone who had no previous radio experience. And the gifted Mark Radcliffe who was mentioned on this morning's show is always well worth a listen, whether it's his R2 or 6 Music show.

It's good to read all the recommendations here, I think I love discovering a new radio show almost more than I do a new tv show.

6 Music isn't bad but sometimes it feels very smug & middle class, the natural home of all those weedy indie kids you used to despise ( and possibly beat) for being so up themselves.
If a caller is put on air for a feature they are invariably graphic designers, teachers , college lecturers , architects & artists.
A few months ago some guy who called Steve Lamacq said he was a painter & Lamacq asked him where he had been exhibited only to be told that he painted houses.

Though both Shaun Keaveney & Radcliffe & Maconie are excellent & very often hilarious.

I'm downloading all the Ten Minute Podcasts I can find on iTunes now. There are 46 of them, don't know if that's since they started or not.

Also, with it being iTunes, are these podcasts likely to have DRM in them? Am I going to have to start paying Apple £5/month to prevent them from committing digital suicide?

Wow. I downloaded all 46 episodes through iT*nes. 16 of them are mp3 files (all 14,425kb, but they seem to play ok) in the folder:

K:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Podcasts\Ten Minute Podcast

and the other 30 are in:

K:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\Podcasts

But in the case of these 30, each one is called "download.mp3", and is in its own folder, and the folder is the same name as the podcast, but with ".tmp" on the end. They all play fine, but I'd still have to rename each file from "download.mp3".

iT*nes drives me totally insane every time I try to use it. I've never hated a piece of software more.

If you don't like iTunes, you don't have to use it. A podcast feed is just an RSS feed with MP3 attachments.
Podcasts don't have DRM. Apple don't supply podcasts, all podcasts come from the publisher of that podcast's own server.
Here's a trick that often works for any podcast. Search for:

"ten minute podcast" feedburner OR "rss feed"

That'll get you to: http://tenminutepodcast.com/feed/podcast/

And that's the direct feed. You can download the MP3s directly from the feed, or with something like DownThemAll or another podcatcher.

Be aware that many of us hardcore Carolla fans think he's gone a bit bonkers recently and the podcast is going off the rails somewhat. For that reason, I'd recommend starting with either the first ACP podcasts from 2009 if you can, or even Loveline. The current ACS shows are still often very funny, but he's gone a bit overboard with the "It's so hard being rich!" rants and all the political nonsense.

Yup. TenMinPod is slightly unusual in that they use their own server. You should see "RSS feed" in bold in the text part of the search results though.

I really do like 6 Music & I'm not a hipster (far from it) I find it's right for my musical tastes (although I wish they'd play some more cheesy 80's pop from time to time) and it's a decent station all round. I listen to Shaun Keaveney (when Moyles isn't on a will do in future when Moyles is gone), Radcliffe & Maconie (a brilliant mix of humour and great music), Jon Holmes (not to everyone's taste and he's not a fan of Moyles but aside from that some great music and some funny politcal satire) and the Craig Charles Funk & Soul show (which is another great show). I also occasionally listen to 6Mix (which is a nice chill out dance show), Steve Lamacq (who I wish I had now listened to more when he was on Radio 1) and Marc Riley (but unlike Radcliffe who I find always listenable with or without Maconie, with Riley I find I have to be in the mood, his stuff is the more stronger indie stuff that the chart friendly stuff).

I just wish 6 Music was on FM (it was planned at one stage before they realised they didn't have the space IIRC) as it'd be a rather popular station.
