Newbies- Introduce yourself

The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

I've been to Bracknell before. The train station and retail park are thoroughly depressing.

At least it's something worth spending 30 mins or so looking around. My hometowns main attraction is a cottage. A * cottage. It's tiny as well. An abstinent man has balls bigger than that shite.

My hometown has LOADS of great stuff to look at. Unfortunately it also has an absolutely bollockingly crap local authority which seems content to let the place ferment under layers of litter and shit and holds the massive historical importance of the place as valueless it seems.

Never mind Colchester, I still love you.

Don't be rude. Its a brilliant place - or it could be if it were looked after properly.

Correct. Waitrose headquaters are situated here. We also have a Waitrose shop which has just opened. Sadly nobody in this town can afford to shop there.

His handbags are nice but his clutches are a big pile of wank. Seen better clutches in the WWE.

People must still get fooled though. Or maybe the email spam just isn't working out anymore. I read somewhere recently that spam is like 70-80% of all email now.

I don't know about the percentages, but my general office account at work gets shedloads of those emails - you know the ones, "I am widow of African Billionnaire and want to send you all my money", also the "Barclays have suspended your online banking". My question is, does anyone ever actually make any money out of these? The ought to be so easy to police, and surely everyone is wise to them but also, if no one is biting, why are they still in circulation? I can't help thinking that if anyone did respond to one, it would be dead easy to find and prosecute the perpetrator these days too.

Has anyone heard of people who have fallen into traps like these? I certainly haven't.

The trouble is a lot of the spam is sent by botnets, which are basically millions of infected PCs being commanded to do the same thing, as opposed to a single machine.

Yes but I suspect you mix with people of at least average intelligence in the main. Don't forget that if you are receiving them and most of your office are, then it follows that almost anyone with an email account is and that includes brain-dead morons, of which there are lots. Given the volumes of mail that gets sent out for free (as Ryan says, they use hijacked PCs, so hardware costs are minimal), if even half a percent of them are fooled - or even less - then it's probably worth their while to do it.

I find it almost impossible to believe that even a half percent would fall for it - and if they did, surely we would hear about it when they went bleating to the newspapers?

Well yes - but I can't help thinking that if anyone did, it would be publicised. And it never is, so why is it still happening?
