Targeting the only demographic that BBC doesn't broadcast for would kill the competition dead and would be against the BBC trust.

It'll only kill the competition if the competition is total crap. Oh wait... hang on.... :)

We've started putting Absolute Radio on at work. DJ's aren't the best, but the songs are golden.

Matt Edmondson has that exile for listeners 30 and over because of the BBC guidelines. He says if you are 30 you need to find another radio station to listen to. It's ridiculous to who is listening if they are playing what they consider age appropriate music. It's not like they are playing Barry Manilow and attracting older listeners with their music.

Where did Matt Edmondson say that, and why would a specialist DJ have anything to do with the demographics?

It's a tongue in cheek feature where he gets people over 30 to text in, then he calls them back and advises them on more 'age appropriate' radio that they can listen to. It's more a dig at the idea of an age demographic than anything else.

Ah. I don't think I've ever actually heard his show, so that would explain why that made no sense to me!

I haven't listened to Matt's show live, just downloaded his podcast. I like some of those rehashed R1 interviews where he substitutes his own questions and makes them fit in -more entertaining than the original interviewer's question - but some of his actual interviews are funny. He interviewed Jason Derulo and pretended that he got all of the very inaccurate information from his Wikipedia page. Unless it was agreed off air, Jason seemed to be getting more and more irritated. There was something where I think he was saying to Jason that he read his real name is Hamish Cumberbatch. Jason replies, "I don't know what a Hamish Cumberbatch is." That quote is played on many of his podcasts.

I've been prepairing myself from exile from Radio One by stock piling TCMS podcasts and looking at my alternatives.

So far, Jack FM seems to be winning. No DJ's, 90's indie rock with occasional modern rock....i will do for the meantime.

What to listen to after September?

Postby Sally A » Sun Aug 19, 2012 8:29 pm

Radio 2..............unlikely.
Radio 4..............maybe.
Radio 3............no chance.
Local Radio............arse.
5 live.........if it's banter not sport, a possibility.

Which radio show will cheer me up, give me a titter in the morning, whilst making me feel part of the gang?

Any ideas?, must be on FM. I suppose I could listen online until 9.00am ish, but cranking up the computer in the morning, is not the same as just switching on the radio.

:( Grey days ahead. :(

Another merged thread :?

Nick Grimshaw on Radio 1?

If you want to listen to Moyles in the morning there is an archive on here that will take you years to get through if you listen to one per day. I have been listening to the show from the start for the past few months and am up to late May 2004. It is bloody brilliant!

Just listen to that if no other stations take your fancy.

I hear Capital is very good...

I would've suggested Shaun Keaveny on BBC Radio 6Music but you said it has to be FM. He has a good mix of witty banter and alright music.

But yes, there are grey days ahead in the post Moyles breakfast show era...

DAB signal in the home is rubbish, but might try Shaun on R6.

If it must be FM, surely 5Live is no possibility? I would say to give Radio 2 a chance - you never know, you might like it.

My plan is to give Grimmy a go while I'm getting ready and then once I'm out it's archive Moyles on the mp3 player. If I find myself hating Grimmy's show then I dunno - Real XS probably. They're very 'local station' though, lots of people on the phone talking about their motorbike show in Bury or something similarly dull.

I'm trying some of the podcasts as recommended by Neil earlier in this thread:

So far I've done two episodes of Jim & Eddie, which is not bad, although it can be quite aggressive (Aussie comedians often seem to be quite aggressive in their comedy I find). I'll definitely do a few more, and see how that goes.

I've also just done the first seven episodes of the Ten Minute Podcast, which I'm really enjoying, and which is more similar to Moyles kind of humour in my opinion. Just a shame they are only 10 minutes each - you fly through them.

Yeah, TenMinPod is great. Jim and Eddie is not for the faint-hearted. I think it's worth persevering with, if you enjoy Jim's brand of "raw" comedy. As the episodes progress you find out that
Jim is, deep down, the kind-hearted one and Eddie is the heartless douchebag
With both TCMS and Adam Carolla on holiday (disaster!), I've been catching up with "banked" podcasts. Greg Fitzsimmons has had a really good run of guests recently, including:

Sarah Silverman.
Artie Lange and Todd Barry
Jeffrey Ross
Jim Jefferies
Jay Mohr
Greg Proops
Paul Scheer
Danny Zuker (Modern Family)
Steven Wright
Willie Garson

I tried BBC R6 this morning, as expected after a few minutes at 8.00am the sound went all bubbly, and totally drowned 30 secs later. DAB is not good for this area.

I subsequently switched to Radio 4 on FM today....... 8O 8O 8O 8O all about women's orgasms by 0910hrs!!!!

Since when has R4 become so racy and so early in the morning? I know I nearly choked a few weeks ago about a Gondolier getting a blow job under a back alley bridge in the afternoon play.

I just want harmless comedy that will make me smile for the work day ahead.

Pleasantly surprised with KMFM (my local station in Kent) last week. They have a mix of music which actually sits quite well with me - modern stuff and 90s thrown in from around the time I was growing up. Coupled with the fact a lot of the ex-Invicta (now Heart) jocks are here, it feels like I'm listening to radio being a kid again.

I never thought I'd hear myself say this but when Chris goes, I may well try local radio out again! I spose it's fitting that Chris converted me FROM local radio, it's only fair that his departure marks my return TO it!

I did radio 2 this morning...it made me feel old, because I enjoyed it!

It appears the BBCs plan may work and I will be stepping sideways, unless Moyles gets a breakfast job on another station.

I honestly dont think Grimmy will last 6 months on the breakfast show and it will be Greg James is show by this time next year!

Chris Evans is pretty good on R2 breakfast, and when he isn't there Richard Madeley usually fills in which is also excellent. Simon Mayo on Drive on R2 is brilliant - unfortunately he is covered by Liza Tarbuck who is simply AWFUL on the radio (although I like her on telly).

I won't be listening to any live morning radio anymore. I'll put a variety of downloaded shows onto my ipod touch and use it in both the house and then the car. Sorted. In a strange way I'm kind of looking forward to having more time to listen to wider variety of shows.

Just posting to say thanks for the Ten Minute Podcast recommendation. I flew threw them all and I'm now up to date; only problem is that there's just two new episodes a week, and 20 minutes of new content a just isn't the same as 3 and a half hours a day!

I've also started listening to the start of the breakfast show in 2004 as that's when the archive seems to start being more complete. That should keep me occupied for a while.

As for when Grimmy starts, I'll probably still have him as my alarm; music (whether it's the cheesy song or a playlist track) will wake me up either way. I just won't feel like I have to listen to the whole episode to get the full experience.

Bryan Callen has been on a few other podcasts recently. I haven't listened to them yet, but they may be worth looking out for. GAMEFLY! GAMEFLY! GAMEZONE!
I think he has his own podcast as well, I've not listened to it, though.

Help .... what do we listen to in the morning's after Chris?

Postby bestofbda » Sat Sep 08, 2012 11:40 pm

We live in Bermuda and have been listening to Chris every day since 2002. Absolutely gutted that he's going and like everyone else I hope the "reinvention" that big boss Ben spoke of will mean another show, but I hope it will be a breakfast show somewhere else. Chris and the team do an excellent job of keeping us up to date with UK music and what's going on the UK right down to what was good on telly last night. Until Chris emerges somewhere else, does anyone have any suggestions as to what other breakfast show is going to give us a similar level of info about UK music, tv etc? I know it won't be Chris and the team, but we'll need something!
