No Link - May Day Bank Holiday - Monday 2nd May 2005 (MC)

[Posted Saturday, April 30 2005 by MC_]

    - Breakfast DJ Holiday (or Bank Holiday as its also called) means another day off for Chris, Aled, Rachel, Dom and Carrie this Monday... although not for Dave. Him and Chappers are covering Breakfast from 7-10, with special guest Orlando Bloom "live" in the studio. Post them the days line up looks like this:
    10-1 Nemone
    1-4 JK and Joel
    4-7 Spoony
7-9 Zane Lowe (and as normal)

I've gone off track now but essentially what I'm trying to say is that Tedious Link will be back on Tuesday at 0900.

    Thanks.

Prince & The Revolution Raspberry Beret - The beret is regarded as headgear of choice by the French - French first name Dawn is the life partner of Lenny Henry, who is from Dudley - Dudley first name Moore was one of this country’s greatest comedy actors, who starred in many films including “Arthur 2: On The Rocks” - Rocks was a hit for Primal Scream - Primal Scream are fronted by Bobbie Gillespie, who is from Scotland - Scotland is the birthplace of Lorraine Kelly, who ran the marathon this year - This Year's Love was a hit for David Gray - David Gray shares the same surname as Eddie Gray, who used to play for Leeds - Leeds is the home city of both The Music and The Kaiser Chiefs - The Kaiser Chiefs are so named after the South African former football club of Lucas Radebe, who celebrates his testimonial at Elland Road on Monday - Monday is the first day of the week - “Week” rhymes with “teak”, which is a type of wood - Wood comes from trees, which are particularly susceptible to forest fires, which often affect Australia and parts of California, where large houses in Malibu and Hollywood have in the past been burned to the ground - and “Burn Hollywood Burn!” is a famous John Lydon lyric, from Open Up by Leftfield - Which links us predictably to Leftfield and Open Up

    - FLAWS: - Yep again today:
*”Dudley first name Moore” would be Dudley Dudley. Just a slight error on Daves part.
*We also established that if you’re Will, Aled or Chris the first day of the week is Sunday, if you’re Dave its Monday... and if you’re the BBC its Saturday. Silly billies.

TRACK INFO: - Released November 1993
    - Reached number 13, spent five weeks on the chart... and is total crap.

    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Today ahead of Fact Attack for a very apparent reason. This track was taken from the top 3 album “Leftism”, released in February 1995, which spent 93 weeks on the chart.
    - MC FACT ATTACK: - The follow up album to this however, “Rhythm and Stealth” - released nearly 5 years later in October 99, spent just 20 weeks on the chart. It did reach number one though... zzzz.

Wow. I know. I’m as bored as you now. I’m back next week. Ciao.

Blur Parklife - Blur’s Damon Albarn supports Chelsea, who last night failed to score against Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League semi final at Stamford Bridge - A different Stamford Bridge was the location of a huge battle in 1066 between King Harold and The Vikings - Vikings traditionally wore helmets, as do policemen - Policemen tend to carry a notebook and a truncheon - “Truncheon” rhymes with “luncheon”, which is the full word from which we get the common abbreviation “lunch” - “Lunch” shares many of the same letters as “hunch”, which is what Quasimodo suffered from - Quasimodo lived at Notre Dame, which is located next to the river Seine in Paris - Paris Hilton is a big name on the celebrity party circuit, while “circuit” is a word associated with car racing and electrics - If you remove the last letter of “electrics”, you’re left with “electric”, as in The Electric Light Orchestra or “Electric Avenue”, which was a hit for Eddy Grant - A grant is what the government gives to students in order for them to buy cider, rizlas and Doc Martens - Doc Martens are a type of heavy heeled boot, not dissimilar to those worn by the army - Army uniform would also normally include a beret - and if you had a beret that was a deep red colour, a bit like the colour of a raspberry, you’d probably call it a “raspberry beret” - Which links us to Prince & The Revolution and Raspberry Beret

    - FLAWS: - Well, where to start today eh? Lets get a couple of the minor problems sorted first though:
*Batons are carried by policemen, not “truncheons”. We ain’t living in the 60’s no more Dave.
*Students get grants to learn and loans to buy cider, rizlas and Doc Martens. That’s what awaits me in a few months is it? Good stuff. Oh and for the major flaw of the day, see below.

TRACK INFO: - Released July 1985
    - Only got to the shockingly low chart position of 25, despite eventually hanging around for a total of 8 weeks...

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - Balls. I was gonna try and find out when this was last played as a Tedious in my archives... but they are kind of screwed at the minute so I can’t be arsed with the effort. Fairly recently though anyway..
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Available on September 1993’s Best Of Prince “The Hits: 1” compilation. A top five album chart position, 27 weeks on the chart, 3 discs, 56 tracks and er... hours of great listening my great mate.

1066: BATTLE, HASTINGS, NORMANS, VIKINGS AND STAMFORD BRIDGE - DAVE DOES HISTORY:
Dave showed off his clear lack of historical knowledge after Tedious Link today in a brilliant 5-10 minute link pre ramble, all about his line in Tedious that “Stamford Bridge was the location of a huge battle in 1066 between King Harold and The Vikings”. Essentially this was found to be true, but Dave got somewhat in a muddle over the chronological order of events, particularly this in relation to The Battle Of Hastings (in Battle). Dave claimed that Stamford Bridge took place afterwards, but once evidence to came to hand that King Harold actually died in The Battle Of Hastings, he was quick to retract his opinion. He then proceeded to claim the Normans invaded Britain on camel back... or something equally ridiculous. A nice lesson in history for you kids.
Dave - Do you know I was never very good at history
    Chris - Give over

Madonna Like A Prayer - Another big record from the 80’s to include the word “prayer” is “Livin' On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi - Bon Jovi are from the American state of New Jersey - “New jersey!” is what a rugby player might shout towards his teams bench if he’d just had his ripped on the field of play - “Play” is a word you’d expect to see on the controls of Hi Fi equipment, along with “Stop”, “Rewind”, “Fast Forward” and “Pause” - Paws of a different type are the dog and cat equivalent of feet - Feet is the unit of measurement used to gauge height in the world of civil aviation - Aviation is the business of aviators, while “The Aviator” is a film starring Leonardo Di Caprio - Leonardo Di Caprio also starred in Titanic, which was a film about a ship hitting an iceberg - “Iceberg” is a word associated with lettuce - Lettuce is a vital ingredient in a BLT sandwich, along with tomato and of course bacon - Bacon comes from pigs - Pigs have a strong sense of smell, but relatively poor eyesight - and if you were suffering from poor eyesight, you wouldn’t see things sharply and clearly, and instead would view life as a bit of a blur - Which links us to Blur and Parklife

    - FLAWS: - Just the two flaws today (there probably would have been more but the text messages froze):
*Paws are also the cat and dog equivalent of hands, not just feet.
*Oh and Dave wasn’t statistically sure whether pigs have a strong sense sense of smell. He just assumes it cos they have “small piggy eyes”. Ok...

TRACK INFO: - Released September 1994
    - Reached number 10 and spent 7 weeks on the chart in total.

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - More of a rant than a fact attack. Why does Dave only ever seem to pick the same bloody Blur songs for Tedious Link? It’s either this, Country House, Girls & Boys or There’s No Other Way. There’s plenty of others just as good to choose from. To name just a few: Beetlebum, Coffee & TV, The Universal and Charmless Man.
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from the album of the same name, “Parklife”. Still seen as one of the best albums of the 90’s, and particularly key in getting the whole “Britpop” scene off the ground. A number one back in May 94, with 106 weeks on the album chart and a Best British Album award at the 95 Brits (bizarrely).

The Cult She Sells Sanctuary - She Sells Sanctuary was first released in 1985 and was taken from the album “Love” - “Love” rhymes with “glove”, which is something you’d wear on your hand - “Hand In Glove” was a 1984 hit for Sandie Shaw, who was famous for not wearing shoes, a bit like Zola Budd - Zola Budd is from South Africa and in that respect shares something in common with Nelson Mandela - Nelson Mandela once had a celebrity Ground Force makeover from Alan Titchmarsh, Charlie Dimmock and Tommy Walsh -Tommy Walsh supports Arsenal, who last night beat North London rivals Spurs - Spurs are worn by cowboys on their boots, while boots of a sporting nature are likely to possess studs - “Studs” is also a word associated with body piecing and horsebreeding - One of the most famous horse breeders is Jenny Pitman - Jenny Pitman shares the same first name as Jenny Powell, who used to present Wheel Of Fortune but is now a celebrity wrestler - Celebrity Wrestling is up against Doctor Who on a Saturday night - “Saturday Night” was a number one chart topper in 1994 for Whigfield - and Whigfield is a good example of an international female solo artist who only has one name, and in that respect shares something in common with Lulu, Anastacia, Kelis and of course Madonna - Which links us to Madonna and Like A Prayer

    - FLAWS: - A couple of “queries” today according to Dave. Hmm I would call them more “mistakes”:
*Tommy Walsh supports West Ham, not Arsenal.
*Jenny Pitman is in fact a horse trainer, not a horse breeder.

TRACK INFO: - Released March 1989
    - This chart topper spent a controversial 12 weeks in The Top 40 back in 89...

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - At the time this was Madge’s fifth UK number one in four years, although she’s only racked up four more in the following sixteen... FACT.
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from her 3rd UK number one album of the same name, released back in April 89. “Like A Prayer” spent 70 weeks on the chart and was also a number one Stateside too.

Adamski Killer - Adamski’s Killer featured the vocal talents of Seal, who goes out with Heidi Klum - Heidi Klum is a good looking German model, and in that respect shares something in common with Claudia Schiffer, who we once helped to Heathrow with her luggage trolley - “Trolley” rhymes with “holly”, which is something you’d associate with Christmas - Christmas is the season for celebrating and eating turkey - Turkey of a different type is a country, with the capital Ankara - “Ankara” sounds a bit like “anchor”, which is what boats use to stop them from drifting - Drifting originates from the word “drift”, which is a word associated with snow - Snow had a 1993 hit with “Informer”, while an informer is someone who might help the police - The Police is the band that launched the career of Sting - A sting is what you might get from a bee - B in alphabetical order is letter number 2 - 2 multiplied by 12 is 24, which is the name of a high profile drama series starring Kiefer Sutherland - Kiefer Sutherland has a birthday just before Christmas in December, unlike me who had a birthday yesterday - and because it was my birthday yesterday, it seems only fair that I link todays track to anything I want (MC: for a change) - Which links us to The Cult and She Sells Sanctuary

    - FLAWS: - Just the one this morning:
*Informants help the police, not informers.

TRACK INFO: - Released May 1985
    - Despite failing to reach the top ten and hitting just number 15, this track actually spent a total of 19 weeks in the UK Top 40... and another 4 when remixed back in 93.

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - Ian Astbury originally formed The Cult as “Southern Death Cult” back in Bradford in 1981... FACT.
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from the compilation “Pure Cult”, a number one album back in February 1993... tis 12 years ago now kids.

Van Halen Jump - “Jump” was also the title of a record by The Pointer Sisters - Sisters are the female verison of brothers - Brothers In Rhythm had a 1991 hit with “Such A Good Feeling” - “Feeling” rhymes with “kneeling”, which is what you might do in church - Church first name Charlotte goes out with rugby player Gavin Henson - Gavin Henson shares the same surname as Jim Henson, who was the creator of The Muppets - The Muppets is the show that launched the career of Kermit The Frog - Kermit The Frog is green - Green Gartside was the man who fronted Scritti Politti - Scritti Politti had a 1988 hit with “Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry For Loverboy)”, while “Loverboy” was 1985 hit for Billy Ocean - Billy Ocean shares the same surname as Danny Ocean, who was the Oceans Eleven and Twelve character played by actor George Clooney - George Clooney also starred in “A Perfect Storm”, alongside Marky Mark Wahlberg, who along with the Funky Bunch scored a top 14 hit in 1991 with “Good Vibrations”, which was also the title of a classic record by The Beach Boys - The beach is where you might find a grounded killer whale if it was washed ashore at high tide - If you remove the “whale” part of killer whale, you’re left simply with “killer” - Which links us to Adamski and Killer

    - FLAWS: - Bar the fact Kermit The Frog started out in Sesame Street and not The Muppets, it was seamless. Just boring discussions on high and low tides and stuff.

TRACK INFO: - Released April 1990
    - A huuuge number one single, which spent a long 18 weeks on the chart in the total.

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - Seal’s own version of this song was released a year or so later in November 1991, reaching number 8 in the UK Top 40...
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Available on the album “Killer: The Best Of Adamski”, alongside a special remix and sixteen other of his... er huge hits.

Natalie Imbruglia Big Mistake - “Big Mistake” was released in 98, the year the World Cup was won by host nation France - France shares a border with Italy - The capital of Italy is Rome - “Roam” was a 1990 hit for The B-52’s, and was a follow up to the worldwide smash “Love Shack” - “Shack” rhymes with “tack”, which is something you might use when laying a carpet, and “tack” is also a term used in sailing - “Sailing” was a 1975 hit for Rod Stewart - Rod Stewart shares the same surname as Moira Stewart, who reads the news - ‘The News” are the name of the backing group of Huey Lewis - Huey Lewis & The News contributed tracks to the soundtrack of “Back To The Future” - Back To The Future starred Michael J. Fox, who also starred in the films “Teen Wolf” and “Doc Hollywood” - Hollywood is where Aled has just come back from - “From” is an anagram of “form”, which is something you might have to fill in if you were in the post office - The post office is somewhere that operates a queueing system - and if you were in a real hurry and didn’t have time to wait in the post office queue, and weren’t worried about pushing infront of other people in the queue, then you might as well “jump”... the queue - Which links us to Van Halen and Jump

    - FLAWS: - Believe it or not, er yeah. A seamless Tedious today.

    - FLAWS: - A fair few this morning:
*Bolton is in Greater Manchester, not Lancashire.
*Water is the primary ingredient in cider, not apples.

GUESS WHO’S BACK! Er Moyles... and me. Sorry.

The Original I Luv U Baby - “Original” is a word associated with paintings and art and stuff, which are traditionally displayed in a gallery - “Gallery” rhymes with “Valerie”, which was a hit for Steve Winwood and was sampled on the recent hit Call On Me by Eric Prydz - Eric Prydz shares the same first name as Erik Estrada, who starred as Ponch in the classic TV series ChiPs - Chips of a different type are traditionally served as an accompaniment to fish - Fish live underwater - “Underwater Love” was a hit for Smoke City in 1997, and featured on an advert for jeans - Jeans are made from a material called denim, which was worn extensively in the late 90’s by the pop group B*Witched - Exactly 50% of B*Witched was made up of sisters Adele and Keavy Lynch, who have a famous brother in the form of Shane Lynch, who was in Boyzone with Ronan Keating - “Keating” rhymes with “bleating”, which is the noise made by sheep - Sheep are plentiful in mountainous areas such as Snowdonia - Snowdonia can get very changeable weather and so it’s always a good idea to take a Mac - The French translation of a Mac is probably “La Mac” or something - and Lamacq, first name Steve, tonight has Chris Martin hand delivering the new single by Coldplay - Which links us to classic Coldplay and Shiver

    - FLAWS: - Dave was back with a mess of a link:
*Fish live in water, not underwater.
*Eric Prydz and Erik Estrada’s christian names are only the same phonetically.
*Plus (rather crucially) “la mac” in French is actually “un impermeable”. Oui, tis true.

Oasis Rock n Roll Star - Oasis brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher share the same surname as Kirsty Gallacher, whose currently starring in The Games along with Craig Charles - Craig Charles is most famous for the shows Robot Wars and Red Dwarf - The plural of dwarf is dwarves, who are a big part of the story of Snow White - Snow White shares the same surname as Jimmy White, who is a respected name from the world of snooker - Snooker was the subject of the quiz show Big Break with Jim Davidson - Jim Davidson once offended the residents of Great Yarmouth with his derogatory comments, while we have nothing but nice things to say about the place we regard as the Las Vegas of Norfolk - Norfolk is the name of an English county, and in that respect shares something in common with Devon - Devon was also the name of the old fella in Nightrider - Nightrider was the programme that first launched the career of David Hasselhoff, whose now a huge music star in Germany - “Germany 1 England 5” was the scoreline in Munich during that famous game back in 2001 - 2001 minus six years takes you back to 1995 - and when you think of 1995 in the context of great dance records which might be nice to hear again on a Friday such as this, you think of I Luv U Baby by The Original - Which links us to The Original and I Luv U Baby

    - FLAWS: - Just the one pre holiday flaw:
*As you may have gathered by my transcription above, Liam and Noel Gallagher don’t phonetically share the same surname as Kirsty GALLACHER, whose surname features a C. Dave said all three certainly share celtic roots anyhow.

TRACK INFO: - Released January & August 1995

Air Kelly Watch The Stars - Air are musical and French and in that respect share something in common with Daft Punk - The dad of one of the fellas out of Daft Punk was in the band Ottawan - Ottawan are best known for their camp disco classic entitled "D.I.S.C.O." which reached number 2 in 1980, which was the same year that Estelle was born - "Born In The USA" was a big hit for Bruce Springsteen, who was nicknamed The Boss - Boss Hogg was a baddie in The Dukes of Hazzard - “Hazard” was the title of a track by Richard Marx - Richard Marx shares the same surname as both Groucho Marx and Karl Marx, who was a driving force in the movement of communism - Communism is still popular in South Korea - South Korea eat dog - “Dog” rhymes with “nog”, which when preceded by the word “egg” gives the name of a popular yuletide drink - “Drink lots of water” is good advice if you're planning on spending the day out in the sunshine - "You can wait for a lifetime to live your life in the sunshine" is a lyric from Cigarettes and Alcohol, a track taken from the classic album Definitely Maybe - and Definitely Maybe, like most great albums, begins with track one, which in this case is the fantastic Rock n Roll Star - Which links us to Oasis and Rock n Roll Star

    - FLAWS: - Totally useless today from Comedic Dave:
*Communism is not popular in South Korea, its popular in North Korea.
*The lyric from Cigarettes and Alcohol is actually “You can wait for a lifetime to spend your days in the sunshine”, not whatever guff Dave made up.
*Oh and all rubbish albums begin with track one too, not just all great albums.

Dave said 3 errors wasn’t bad for “a whole page of fact” - and awarded himself 88%. Very modest.

TRACK INFO: - This track (believe it or not - I don’t care) was never actually released as a single
    - N/A

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - Noel Gallagher is quoted as saying he said everything he ever wanted to say in just this song... and ever since has been making it up. Hes done a damn good job in that case.
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - As if you need to ask - its on Definitely Maybe, one of the greatest albums ever made. Possibly the greatest opening track on a debut album too, in my humble opinion. Just go buy it, theres no excuses.

    - NEW OASIS SINGLE LYLA PLAYED THIS MONDAY @ 8:15 WITH SCOTT MILLS
