Wednesday 27th October 2004 Link - John Peel Tribute (MC) [Posted Thursday, October 28 2004 by MC_]
 | Kym Sims Too Blind To See It - Kym Sims Too Blind To See It was a top 5 hit in 1991, the same year that Smells Like Teen Spirit was released in the UK by Nirvana - Nirvana have had an enormous influence on much of the music that we enjoy today, and their success and popularity in this country can be traced back to their first exposure on one of Radio 1’s legendary Peel Sessions - The Peel Sessions provided the taste for much of the music that we enjoy today - Quite simply it was John Peel that gave bands such as Pulp, New Order and The Smiths their first break, and it was him that introduced so many of these legendary names to the world - Music is all about innovation and discovery, and nobody did more for new music in this country than John Peel - So it seems only fitting that on a day when we celebrate his life and the music that he’s brought us, we take this opportunity to play a record by a band who, like so many before and after them, owe their popularity to the vision of Mr John Peel - It was a personal favourite of Johns and its title I don’t think could be more apt - It’s The Smiths and This Charming Man - RIP John Peel |
 | - TRACK INFO: - Released November 1983, re issued August 1992 - Spent 12 weeks in the chart first time around and reached number 25 - Spent 5 weeks in the chart upon re issue, peaking at number 8 - ALBUM DETAILS: - Get it on “The Smiths: Singles”. |

 | Stereophonics Local Boy In The Photograph - A photograph is something that needs to be developed in the dark - Dark in the world of chocolate is the opposite of milk - “Milk” rhymes with “silk”, which is made by worms - Worms come in many different types, including mealworms, earthworms and of course tapeworms - Tapeworms live in the stomach - The stomach is a part of the body that can often ache and in fact is probably the second most common achy body part after the head - Head is often associated with shoulders in the world of shampoo - Shampoo can be made with lots of different things such as Aloe Vera, jojoba and even beer - Beer can go flat, as can tyres - Tyres are made from rubber, as are rubber bands, which are very good if you want to stop a poster from unravelling - “Unravelling” shares many of the same letters as the word “travelling”, as in The Travelling Wilburys, who were a classic rock combo consisting of legends such as Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and of course Roy Orbison - and Roy Orbison was a famous blind musician, who along with Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles would never use sheet music, cos they were literally “too blind to see it” - Which links us to Kym Sims and Too Blind To See It
- FLAWS: - The biggest f*ck up in recent times from Comedic Vitty, perhaps his best since accusing Don McLean of being dead: *Roy Orbison isn’t actually blind at all y’see, he was just a wearer of big sunglasses. What a mistaker to maker eh? |
- TRACK INFO: - Released December 1991 - Went straight in at number 5 and then spent the following 11 weeks on the chart too - MC FACT ATTACK: - I dunno if you are aware but Kym made a brief return to music in 1996 when she signed to a new record label (must have bribed em) and released her comeback single “We Gotta Love”, which flew straight in with a rocket... at number 58. Whoops. - ALBUM DETAILS: - Jeez, took me forever to find this on a compilation. I did eventually though, you can catch it on CD 1 of “Hed Kandi: Back To Love 3”. I can see the queues forming at HMV from here...

 | Black Legend You See The Trouble With Me - “Legend” was the title of a greatest hits style compilation by Bob Marley - Bob Marley shares the same first name as Bob Holness, the legend from Blockbusters - Blockbusters used to regularly give away a dictionary - “Dictionary” (ironically) is one of the longest words in the dictionary, totalling a massive ten letters - Letters are delivered by a postman, while French letters are something you’d have to get from your chemist because they’re actually another term for johnnies - Johnnies are worn for the process of protection - Protection was a big hit for Massive Attack - Massive Attack are from Bristol, which is also the home of the Clifton Suspension Bridge - Bridge first name Wayne plays for Chelsea, unlike Adrian Mutu who now clearly doesn’t - “Doesn’t” is an amalgamation of the words “does” and “not” - If you reverse the letter order of the word “not” and add the letters “N” and “E” you get “tonne”, which is the unit of measurement for the production of coal - The production of coal was traditionally a primary industry in the valleys of South Wales - and South Wales is the birthplace of the mighty Stereophonics - Which links us to the Stereophonics and Local Boy In The Photograph
- FLAWS: - Apparently seamless again, although I’m sure I could find some kind of technicality in there if I had way too much time on my hands (which let’s face it - I do). |
- TRACK INFO: - Released February 1998 - Disgracefully spent just four weeks inside the UK Top 40, although it did reach the dizzy heights of no. 14 on debut (rock a loo la indeed) - MC FACT ATTACK: - This is a rough guess and not a fact as such, but this must be in the top 5 of Daves most repeated Tedious Link choices (god that is tenuous isn't it - better research needed)... - ALBUM DETAILS: - The fourth release from “Word Gets Around”, the superb 1997 debut by the Stereophonics. Previous singles included “More Life In A Tramp’s Vest” (no. 33 May 97), “A Thousand Trees” (no. 22 Aug 97) and “Traffic” (no. 20 Nov 97).

 | Pearl Jam Alive - Pearl Jam were led by gravelly voiced rock legend Eddie Vedder - Eddie Vedder shares the same christian name as Eddie Edwards, who is probably the most famous British ski jumper of all time - Thyme is a famous type of herb, as is rosemary - Rosemary Conley is a famous name in the world of diet and keep fit videos - The word “videos” is derived from the Latin word “video”, which I think means “to see” - Sea Of Love was a popular film starring Al Pacino, that was released in 1989 - 1989 was the year that the Berlin Wall came down, the event that provided the inspiration for the classic song Wind Of Change by The Scorpions - Scorpions are dangerous little critters that are commonly found in the desert - If you add an additional “S” to “desert” you get “dessert”, which is what you might have with your coffee - Coffee that is served with milk is normally referred to as being white, while coffee that is served without milk is referred to as being black - If you add the word “legend” to “black” you get “Black Legend” - and when you think of the words “Black” and “Legend” in the context of big dance records from the year 2000, you think of Black Legend and You See The Trouble With Me - Which links us predictably to Black Legend and You See The Trouble With Me
- FLAWS: - Totally seamless today it seems. I would have checked up on that Latin thing but frankly, I’d rather stick a fork in my eye. Not really, I just couldn’t be arsed. |
- TRACK INFO: - Released June 2000 - Spent almost four months (15 weeks) in the Official Chart, including a week at number one - MC FACT ATTACK: - It’s brief stint at number one was ended by the return of Ms Minogue in her golden hot pants (ahhh), as Kylie’s Spinning Around knocked it off (as it were) from numero uno. - ALBUM DETAILS: - As shocking as you may find this, there never was a Black Legend album. You can however get You See The Trouble With Me on import via Amazon (you losers) or alternatively on Now 46... that’s a classic compilation from yesteryear kids.

 | Wheatus Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus’s follow up to Teenage Dirtbag was a cover of the 1988 hit “A Little Respect” by Erasure - “Erasure” sounds like “eraser”, which is what the Americans call a “rubber” - Rubber is made from trees - Trees are made from wood - Wood, first name Victoria, is a famous comedienne from Lancashire - Lancashire is a county full of world famous beauty spots such as Wigan Pier and Blackpool Tower - Blackpool Tower looks very similar to the Eiffel Tower, which is in Paris - Paris is the capital of France, who are a major European producer of onions - Onions, or more precisely “French Onion”, is a top selling flavour of soup - “Soup” shares many of the same letters as “soap”, which is made from horses - Horses can be a very good form of transportation in poor countries that don’t have trucks and stuff, and can be used to transport things like bananas and coffee - Coffee is a popular drink in the United States Of America, where the coffee capital is the city of Seattle - and when you think of Seattle in the context of great bands from the early 90’s, you think of Pearl Jam - Which links us to Pearl Jam and Alive
- FLAWS: - Just the two major inaccuracies today: *Trees aren’t technically “made from” wood, they naturally grow. *Horses don’t make soap, they are just involved in the production of glue. (Fact... according to Dave anyway). |
- TRACK INFO: - Released February 1992 - Spent six weeks in the UK charts after debuting inside the Top 20 at number 16 - MC FACT ATTACK: - Pearl Jam’s debut album was entitled “Ten” because it was the shirt number of their favourite basketball player, Mookie Blaylock. - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from the aforementioned “Ten”, which peaked in the album chart at number (yep, you’ve guessed it)... eighteen.

 | Chaka Khan I Feel For You - “Chaka” sounds a bit like “chukka”, the Indian word describing the sub divided sections in a game of Horse Polo - Polo first name Marco was a famous Italian explorer who I think might have discovered China - China In Your Hand was a big hit for T'Pau, who were fronted by Carol Decker - Carol Decker is a famous ginger woman, as is Anne Robinson - Anne Robinson is the host of The Weakest Link - The plural of link is links, which together make up a chain - A chain is something you might find in the world of property - Property is a business of Estate Agents - Agents of a different type can be secret, as in Secret Agents, which are a bit like Spies - Spies Like Us is a classic film starring Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase - Chevy Chase shares the same surname as Lorraine Chase, who is now in Emmerdale along with that Marilyn bird who used to live with flat head Fisher and also used to go out with Matt Le Tissier - Matt Le Tissier supports Southampton, who last weekend were the latest scalp for high flying Everton - and Everton are the club that Wayne Rooney walked out on to join mid table strugglers Manchester United, proving himself to be nothing more than a “teenage dirtbag” - Which links us to Wheatus and Teenage Dirtbag
- FLAWS: - Believe it or not seamless. Dave was getting grief from the Man U fans though, this for his Wayne Rooney bashing. |
- TRACK INFO: - Released February 2001 - Spent a massive 20 weeks in the Top 40, reaching it’s peak @ number 2 - MC FACT ATTACK: - Kept off top spot by Bob The Builder and Mambo No. 5. Ahh what a tune.. - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from Wheatus’s self titled debut album, which reached number 7 in the UK back in March 01. Other singles from it included “A Little Respect” (Erasure cover - no. 3 July 01) & Wannabe Gangstar (no. 22 Jan 02).

 | Oasis Stand By Me - “Stand by me” is what an irritated parent might say to a misbehaving child when travelling on a busy bus with no spare seats - Seats are great for people who like to sit down - Sit Down was a big hit for James - The name “James” is often abbreviated to “Jim” or “Jimmy”, as in Jim Bowen or Jimmy Saville - Jimmy Saville hosted Top Of The Pops for many years, in the days before they had rules preventing ugly people from hosting the legendary show - “Show” rhymes with “snow”, which is something you would expect to find on a cold mountain - Cold Mountain was a big recent movie hit starring Renée Zellweger and Nicole Kidman - If you remove the last three letters of “Kidman” you are left simply with “kid”, which is a word to describe a young goat - Goats or more precisely goatskin, is used to make clothes and shoes and hats and stuff in places like Mongolia - Mongolia used to be ruled by the evil warlord Genghis Khan - and Genghis Khan shares the same surname as the legendary big haired soul diva from the world of music, namely the one and only Chaka Khan - Which links us to Chaka Khan and I Feel For You
- FLAWS: - Pretty much flawless with one minor quibble being that “Jimmy” isn’t really an abbreviation of James as it contains the same amount of letters. Hmm. Further note also fact fans: Dave was suffering from a severe bout of dyspepsia during this particular link... I know - wow. |
- TRACK INFO: - Released October 1984 - Spent 16 weeks in total on the chart, after debuting at number one - MC FACT ATTACK: - Features Stevie Wonder on harmonica, song originally written by Prince - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from Chaka Khan’s debut UK album “I Feel For You” (funnily enough), which reached number 15 back in the UK in 84.

 | Bon Jovi Livin' On A Prayer - “Livin' On A Prayer” was taken from the million selling album “Slippery When Wet” - “Slippery When Wet” is a safety warning you’d expect to see when someone is washing the floor - Floors are washed with the use of a mop - A mop top was a haircut made fashionable by the Beatles in the 60's - The 60's was the decade that saw the invention of the mini skirt and flower power - “Power” rhymes with “shower”, which is probably the most popular form of washing, just ahead of baths - Baths were I think invented by the Romans, who also invented straight roads - Roads is one place you'd see cat’s eyes, another place being a cattery- “Cattery” rhymes with “slattery” as in Tony Slattery - Tony Slattery shares the same christian name as Tony Blair - Tony Blair spends much time in America - America is the country where you’d find the Arizona city of Phoenix - Phoenix first name River is a deceased actor who starred in films such as Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom and of course Stand By Me - Which links us rather predictably to Oasis and Stand By Me
- FLAWS: - Dave ballsed up on the River Phoenix line, as he was actually in “Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade“, not the Temple Of Doom... fact. |
- TRACK INFO: - Released October 1997 - Spent 18 weeks in the chart, peaking at number 2 - MC FACT ATTACK: - The only single taken from (the mainly crap) Be Here Now not to get to no.1 - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from the aforementioned and critically slammed Be Here Now, Oasis’s third studio album released back in August 97. If you haven’t got a copy, then keep it that way...
WELCOME TO THE NEW LOOK TEDIOUS LINKS PAGE PEOPLE (MC) [Posted Wednesday, October 20 2004 by MC_]

(The Tedious one himself)...
Yep, hello to you MC fans. I’m back (if you are suffering withdrawal symptons) and this is my new home - updating Daves Tedious Links every Wednesday night @ 11pm. Basically I thought we’d try and revamp the page a bit - with new fancy fonts and colours (genius), extra info on Daves choices, plus your chance to get involved (which will come before Christmas). This is how the page will look from now on then: - I’ll have each Tedious Link from the show transcribed here in full, plus all those oh so inevitable flaws - There’ll also be track info - Month and year of release, total weeks on the chart etc - MC Fact Attack - My useless dull facts on each particular song - Plus of course Album Details - With where you can find the track, and it’s cover displayed
Hopefully it’ll liven it up round here anyway, and we’ll try and push the hits counter up a bit... so tell your friends please (all two of em).

Juliette's Last Day - Friday 1st October 2004 [Posted Friday, October 1 2004 by MC_]
 | Aerosmith Dude (Looks Like A Lady) - Aerosmiths Steven Tyler has a famous daughter called Liv - Live Forever was a single taken from the classic album Definitely Maybe - “Maybe Baby” was the title of the film based on the Ben Elton novel Inconceivable, but they obviously had to change the name as the Americans wouldn’t have known what “inconceivable” meant - “Meant” rhymes with “Gwent”, which is a county in Wales - Wales is the birthplace of Sian Lloyd - Lloyd George was a famous politician, while the similar sounding Boy George was actually the lead singer of Culture Club - Culture Club scored a 1983 chart topper with Karma Chameleon - A chameleon is one of the few animals that can change it’s colour - Color Me Badd are responsible for the horrendous I Wanna Sex U Up - Up is one of two directional options in the world of elevator travel - Travel is what you’d have to do if you needed to get from London to Manchester - Manchester is where our very own lovely Juliette Ferrington is moving to, as she becomes Five Live’s all star north west football reporter - and if you were travelling from London to Manchester you’d probably want to hear some of your favourite songs to while away the three hour journey - and if you were Juliette Ferrington, one of these favourite musical treats would have to be Livin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi - Which links us to Bon Jovi and Livin' On A Prayer
Released - October 1986 Peak Chart Position - 4 Album - Available on “Crossroad - The Best Of Bon Jovi”, a number one UK album back in October 94 |
