Friday 28th January 2005 Link - Live from Aberystwyth (MC)

[Posted Saturday, January 29 2005 by MC_]

Athlete Beautiful - “Beautiful” is one way of describing the Welsh town of Aberystwyth, which is where we are today - Today is Friday - Friday was the name of a character in the book “Robinson Crusoe”, which was written by Robert Louis Stevenson - Robert Louis Stevenson shares the same surname phonetically as Pamela Stevenson, who is the wife of Billy Connolly - Billy Connolly shares the same christian name as Billy Mitchell, the EastEnders character that’s played by actor Perry Fenwick, who in turn shares the same christian name as the late Perry Como - “Como” is the name of a lake in northern Italy, as is Garda - The word “Garda” is what you would see written on an Irish police car - Cardiff is the capital of Wales, although most tourists to this beautiful country would head straight to the picturesque seaside town of Aberystwyth - Aberystwyth is actually where Aled is from - and when Aled returns to the land of his birth, he likes to breathe the fresh sea air of home, and swim in the beautiful blue sea of home, and walk upon “the green green grass of home” - Which links us amazingly (and fair play to the suits upstairs in the music department for passing this unlikely choice) to Mr Tom Jones and The Green Green Grass Of Home... especially for Aled

    - FLAWS: - A couple of “possible mistakes” according to Dave. To be fair they were pretty much nailed on:
*Daniel Defoe wrote Robinsons Crusoe, not Robert Louis Stevenson
*Aled can’t swim so he therefore can’t “swim in the beautiful blue sea of home”... as he’d drown. Fact.

TRACK INFO: - Released November 1966
    - Tom’s second (and last) UK number one, spending a huge 22 weeks on the singles chart

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - This track sold 1.2 million copies - making it one of only 79 songs ever released to have passed the one million sales mark...
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Available to buy on Tom’s latest Greatest Hits collection, released in March 2003... innit boyo.

ANOTHER FAN OF TEDIOUS LINK WAS REVEALED TODAY: Mr Harry Redknapp - Southampton boss and Comedy Dave fan by the sounds of things...

Happy Mondays Step On - “Step on” is what you might do when boarding a train - The plural of train is trains, which run on rails - “Rails” rhymes with “gales”, which are strong winds that can have a damaging effect on property - Property is sold by estate agents - Agents take a commission or cut - Cutt Off is the current record from Kasabian - Kasabian are from Leicester, as is snooker legend Willie Thorne - “Thorn In My Side” was a 1986 hit for The Eurythmics - The Eurythmics are made up of Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox - Lennox Lewis is a British champion boxer who insists he is to stay in retirement - Retirement often makes people move into bungalows - The word “bungalow” actually originates in India - India is a country that is fond of playing cricket - Cricket is played by people wearing white - In the world of colours, white is the opposite of black - Black first name Roger is a famous former athlete - and when you think of the word “athlete” in the context of great bands from current now, you think of Athlete - Which links us to todays “beautiful” Tedious Link track, Athlete and “Beautiful”

    - FLAWS: - There was some pernickity texters clutching at straws by saying black and white are tones/shades, not colours. I’ll back Mr Vitty up on this one though - they are wrong, he is right. Fact, Dave wins.

TRACK INFO: - Released November 2002
    - Shockingly this song NEVER made The Top 40 - it graced the dizzy heights of number 41 for one week only...

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - Athlete’s debut single “You Got The Style” was apparently “inspired” by the 2001 race riots in Oldham. Tis all I’ve got on em folks, they seem dull.
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from their Mercury nominated album “Vehicles & Animals”, Athlete’s top 20 debut album from April 2003 - their new album “Tourist” is out on Monday incidentally.

    - FLAWS: - ER no longer stars Goose from Top Gun (Anthony Edwards) - according to Moyles he left years ago. Fact, Chris wins.

TRACK INFO: - Released April 1990
    - Peaked at numero cinq, spending 11 weeks on the chart in total

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - Step On is actually a cover of a John Kongos song called "He's gonna step on you again," a number 4 UK hit in May 1971...
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from “Pills 'N' Thrills And Bellyaches”, the Mondays’ top 4 November 1990 LP.... av it.

    - FLAWS: - Chris questioned whether Duran Duran did have a hit with Notorious, but simply got confused with that and Arcadia’s Election Day. What a mistaker to maker..

TRACK INFO: - Released August 1997
    - Ran inside the chart for ten weeks, peaking inside that elusive top ten at 6

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - This posthumous tribute to Notorious BIG (died March 9th 1997) was a US number one single and features a sample from Diana Ross’s November 1980 hit ‘I'm Coming Out”.

Gat Decor Passion - “Passion” rhymes with “fashion”, which involves the use of models - Models of a different type have to be put together with glue - Glue is made from horses - Horses are ridden by cowboys - Cowboys traditionally wear spurs and chaps -“Chaps” rhymes with “flaps”, which are what you’d find on an aircrafts wings - Wings were the post-Beatles musical project of Paul McCartney - Paul McCartney and Heather Mills recently took part in a celebrity edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, as did Richard and Judy - Richard and Judy are married, as are Cherie and Tony Blair - Tony Blair is one of the most powerful men in the world - “World Shut Your Mouth” is a classic record by Julian Cope and also the title of the new comedy vehicle by Dom Joly - Dom Joly was yesterday the guest of JK and Joel - JK was once apparently, according to him, chatted up by Caprice - Caprice says she fancies Jeremy Edwards - Caprice and Jeremy Edwards were both housemates in Celebrity Big Brother, along with rubber faced bum reader Jackie Stallone - and Jackie Stallone’s readings of peoples buttocks could make her the target of some scepticism, with some believing her art to be hogwash and her to be little more than “a charlatan” - Which links us to The Charlatans and How High

    - FLAWS: - None again today, although Chris was still disappointed that Dave didn’t choose that Charlatans classic “Hogwash” as todays Tedious track...

TRACK INFO: - Released June 1997
    - Reached number six in the charts, spending a total of five weeks in the 40...

The Verve Sonnet - A sonnet is a type of poem - If you add a D to the word “poem” you have yourself an anagram of the word “moped” - A moped can be ridden legally at 16 - 16 divided by 4 is 4, which is expressed in the language of Italian as “quattro” - “quattro stagioni” therefore means “four cheeses” in the world of pizza - Pizza is traditionally delivered on a motorycle - Motorcycling is dangerous and motorcyclists are required by law to wear a helmet - Helmet is a popular boys name in Germany - Germany is very liberal thinking when it comes to hairy armpits on women - Women statistically make up approximately 50% of the worlds population - Population is measured using a census, while height is measured using a ruler - The word “ruler” can also be applied to someone who is a king - King prawns are larger than regular prawns, and this is reflected in the price that you pay in the supermarket - The supermarket is also a good place to buy other food stuffs, such as chicken drumsticks, oxo cubes and passion fruit - and if you remove the “fruit” bit of passion fruit, you’re left simply with “passion” - Which links us (not so) predictably to Gat Decor and Passion

    - FLAWS: - Seamless bar the one obvious flaw this morning:
*Daves Italian wasn’t quite up to scratch as he incorrectly stated that “quattro stagioni” means four cheeses - when it actually means four seasons. Four cheeses is actually “quattro formaggio” y’see. Fun with language folks...

TRACK INFO: - Released first in May 1992, then again on the remix in March 96
    - The original 92 version spent just 4 weeks on the chart, charting @ 29 - while the remix hit number six, spending six weeks inside The Top 40.

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - This track is so obscure I have no facts at all about it. FACT. MC wins.
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Available on “Back To The Old Skool - Ibiza”, also featuring hits from Underworld, Robert Miles, Darude, Moloko and David Morales... oi oi let’s av it, choooon!!! ... *cough* and all that malarkey.

Oasis Go Let It Out - Go Let It Out was taken from the album “Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants” - Giants are really big, as are airships and elephants - Elephants never forget - “Never Forget” was the penultimate single from Take That, before they split up and broke the hearts of thousands of pre pubescent girls, a bit like Busted have just done, only on a bigger scale - Scale is a pain when it collects in your kettle - If you add a Y onto the end of the word “kettle” you get “kettley”, as in John Kettley the famous weatherman - Weathermen and women use maps - “Maps” rhymes with “taps”, which are what you’d find in the bathroom - “Bathroom” has the same word ending as “mushroom”, which is a type of fungus - “Fungus” shares many of the same letters as “Hingis”, as in tennis star Martina Hingis - Another famous tennis playing Martina is Martina Navratilova, who is now a US citizen although she used to be a Czech - Check 1-2 was a backing band for Craig McLachlan and his 1990 hit Mona - Mona Lisa is a famous painting and also a famous film - Films need actors - and one of the biggest actors in the world at the moment is Mr Will Smith - Which links us to Will Smith and Gettin' Jiggy Wit It

    - FLAWS: - That’s day 2 this week when Chris and Rach haven’t even tried to question Daves link. I have a couple of personal queries though:
*Does “fungus” really share that many of the same letters as “Hingis”? I can count 3.
*Martina Hingis isn’t a tennis playing Martina anymore, as she retired due to ankle injury in February 2003. FACT. MC wins.

Double Trouble & The Rebel MC Street Tuff - Street Tuff was released in 1989, the same year that “Another Day In Paradise” was a big hit for Phil Collins - Phil Collins shares the same surname as former Everton and Fulham midfielder John Collins, and bizarrely if you reverse the names “John” and “Collins” you get Collins John, who like John Collins before him plays for Fulham - Fulham’s home is Craven Cottage - Cottage pie is much like shepherds pie, except that it uses beef mince instead of lamb - Lam first name Nancy is a famous chef, as is Jamie Oliver - Oliver Twist is a classic book by Charles Dickens - If you remove the last three letters of Dickens you get “Dick”, as in Dick Emery or Dick Turpin the famous highwayman - The best known highwayman or dandy highwayman from the world of music is Adam Ant - Ant & Dec are a celebrity double act from Newcastle Upon Tyne - Newcastle Upon Tyne is the host city of the annual Great North Run - Run was a big hit last year for Snow Patrol - Snow Patrol are from Northern Ireland, as are Ash - “Ash” is a good example of a one syllable three letter word from the English language, a bit like the words “cat”, “pet” and “dog” - and if you had a cat or a dog as a pet, and indeed it needed to go for a walk or a poo or something, you’d have to “go let it out” - Which links us to Oasis and Go Let It Out

    - FLAWS: - The post weigh-in celebrations somewhat overshadowed any checking of Daves Link today - but it all seems to be ok anyway and after all it’s a good record.

TRACK INFO: - Released February 2000
    - Topped the charts and spent a run of 12 weeks inside The Top 40

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - This was the first Oasis single without Bonehead and Guigsy - and the first with Andy Bell & Gem Archer on board. Also their first release since 1998 and their fifth UK number one single.
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - One of only four good songs on “Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants” (number one, March 2000) - definitely as bad as (if not worse than) previous album Be Here Now. Can’t wait for May 16th though - the new album is out then - and in the summer I have tickets to see them in Manchester and Milton Keynes! Rock on tommy...

Stereophonics Traffic - Traffic can be blamed for a lot of air pollution in towns and cities - Towns and cities are regarded as being areas that are urban - If you add a D onto the front of the word urban you get “Durban”, which is a city in South Africa - South Africa is the host of the World Cup in 2010 - The number of years between now and 2010 is 5 - 5 X 12 is 60 - 60 is the amount of minutes in an hour - Our House was a 1982 hit for Madness - Madness are led by Suggs - “Suggs” rhymes with “hugs”, which is what you might see lots of people giving to each other at the airport - Airport 1975 starred Charlton Heston as hero Alan Murdock - Murdock was also the name of an A-Team character played by Dirk Benedict - “Dirk Benedict” sounds a bit like “Eggs Benedict”, which is a type of posh breakfast - “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” was a big hit in 1996 for Deep Blue Something, who got to number one - This week sees the UK’s 1000th number one, find out who it’ll be on The Official Chart Show with Wes, Sunday afternoon from 4 - 4 minus 1 is 3 - and 3 was the chart position in 1989 for The Rebel MC with Street Tuff - Which links us therefore predictably to Double Trouble & The Rebel MC and Street Tuff

    - FLAWS: - A huge huge mistake on Daves part today:
*Dirk Benedict of course played Face in The A-Team, it was Dwight Schultz who played Murdock. You spotted that yourself though didn’t you? yeah mmm hmm.

TRACK INFO: - Released October 1989

Foo Fighters Times Like These - The term “Foo Fighters” refers to what we now know as UFO’s - “UFO’s” stands for “Unidentified Flying Objects”, which most probably come from Space - Space were a short lived 90’s Liverpool beat combo, who were mates with Catatonia’s Cerys Matthews - Cerys Matthews shares the same surname as Bernard Matthews, who was a big name in the world of turkeys - Turkeys go “gobble gobble” while sheep go “baaaa” - Bar is what a pub landlord might do to someone who is a troublemaker - “Maker” rhymes with “Baker”, which is the surname of Cheryl Baker - Cheryl Baker shares the same name, albeit different spelling, as Sheryl Crow, who once recorded an ill advised cover of Sweet Child O' Mine - Sweet Child O' Mine features the guitar mastery of Guns N’ Roses Axe-Man Slash, who is a big fan of Tedious Link, as is David Moyes - David Moyes will go on to become a legendary manager for Everton - Everton have been drawn in the fourth round of the Cup against Sunderland - Sunderland is the birthplace of such famous names as Kate Adie, Denise Roberts, Dave Stewart and Bryan Ferry - Ferry is the most practical way of travelling by car from Holyhead to Dublin - and when you think of Dublin, and the biggest band to emerge from the city, you think of U2 (not Westlife Chris) - Which links us to U2 and I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

Happy new year to you all, good luck if you’re detoxing - and ... good mornin!

Bing Crosby White Christmas - Bing Crosby is now sadly no longer with us, and in that respect shares something in common with Winston Churchill - Winston Churchill was a big fan of cigars, as is John McCririck - John McCririck is in Celebrity Big Brother along with Brigitte Nielsen - Brigitte Nielsen used to be the celebrity other half of actor Sylvester Stallone, who starred in the film “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot”, with his mum played by actress Estelle Getty, who used to be in The Golden Girls - The Golden Girls was set in Miami - Miami was also the setting for the 80’s hit TV series Miami Vice, which starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas - Michael Thomas used to play for Liverpool, as well as Arsenal, Wimbledon and Benfica - Benfica play their home matches at the “Estádio da Luz”, which literally translated means “The Stadium Of Light” - The Stadium Of Light in this country is the home of Sunderland - Sunderland are the team of choice for former Olympian Steve Cram - “Cram” rhymes with “ham”, which is what you might serve in an informal buffet with a selection of other cold cuts - Cold Cut are mates with Yazz - Yazz looks like goalkeeper David James - and David James shares the same first name as David Grohl from the Foo Fighters - Which links us to the first one of 2005, in terms of Tedious Links that is, it’s the Foo Fighters and Times Like These

    - FLAWS: - A corking record to kick off the year, but it’s seamlessness (is that a word?) was ignored by Chris as he wanted to get straight into the new sound half time. I however have a query with Yazz looking like David James - judge for yourselves kids...

    - TRACK INFO: - Released January 2003
    - Disappointingly this track only got to number 12, spending five weeks on the UK chart

    - MC FACT ATTACK: - The Foos have only bettered “Times Like These” twice in terms of UK chart position - first with their debut single “This Is A Call” (number 4 in July 95) - and also with their huge 2002 track “All My Life” (number 5 in October of the same year).
    - ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from the Foos October 2002 album “One By One”, which reached... er number one.
